Kivun: A Jewish Educational Experience

Kivun: A Jewish Educational Experience Kivun is an after-school Judaic program for HHLA students. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:15 - 5:30 pm at Chabad.

KIVUN – An After-School JEWISH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS Who Attend Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School. We began in the fall of 2013 with a K-1 class. In 2015-2016, we will have two classes: a K-1 class and a 2-3 class. Classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:15 - 5:30 pm. The children are picked up from the school and escorted by their teacher to Chabad of

the West Side, at 166 W. 97th Street. Pick up by parents will be from Chabad at 5:30 PM. Kivun is a project of Chabad of the West Side and is headed by Sarah Alevsky of Chabad Family Programs. OUR GOALS

Kivun means direction. It shares the root of the word Kavanah, which means intent and mindfulness. At Kivun, our goal to provide our students with both the knowledge they need as Jews today as well inspire them to imbue their Jewish practice with Kavanah, with meaning and intent. We will be utilizing a child-centered approach, following the language methodology of the ACTFL in teaching Hebrew, the foundation used for language acquisition and literacy in many Hebrew and other language Charter Schools. At Kivun we will...

• Focus on Israel, fostering a love of the land, state, people, history and heritage of Israel.

• Promote activities and programs that highlight Jewish ethics as it relates to the broader human experience.

• Teach Jewish literacy, including a basic understanding of and facility with prayers, blessings, Torah and Jewish literature, along with a fluency with Shabbat and holiday practices.

• Engage families with after-school activities that create a sense of community. There are scholarships available. Please contact Sarah at [email protected] or (212) 864 5010.

It's been eight years of incredible community, fun, learning, connection and last night we closed the door gently on our time together as we say goodbye to Kivun. We have gained tremendously from meeting all our students and learning from them. Every child that walked through our doors was celebrated and loved, and hopefully inspired to live their lives in a more Jewish and intentional way.

It's been a great ride!

Grateful to Chabad of the West Side for being our home, David Gedzelman and the Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life for supporting us in every way possible, consultants like Tamara Gropper and The Jewish Education Project who guided us, our teachers including Levi Hindy Wilansky and Ariella Lazarus Chana Mushka Alevsky and of course our teachers Esther Haser and Rivky Baron for doing an outstanding job this year. Special shoutout to all our parents as well who have been with us through the years!

Next week for all our Kivun and CHS families, past and present!

As we wrapped up the year, we asked our Kivun kids to share their favorite memories, what they learned this year, what they miss about learning in person and the opportunity to thank the teachers, their friends and the entire Kivun family. All our kids personalities are shining in this great video!

Kivun 3rd and 4th graders are finishing up a PBL unit: Jewish Food Attitude. They discussed the central place of food in our traditions; why we say brachot; learned more about Kashrut and practiced ways to avoid food waste. They videoed themselves using leftovers in a creative way, and yesterday, with the help of Morah Ariella Lazaros, baked these delicious looking Challot together over zoom! So proud of the learning that continued in creative and fun ways in Kivun.

The JEwQ Shabbaton was canceled amid COVID concerns, but our intrepid champs participated through online tests and videos! Great job and some good news that we can all use these days....

Our Kivun kids reviewed or learned the story of Purim this week! Through puppets, plays and giant storybooks, the story of the Megillah came alive. The children created masks and graggers to celebrate Purim as well! Our oldest class started to work on a Purim Spiel that's really funny!

Today, our students performed a play they wrote of the learning they did on the Pesach favorite, Echod Mi Yodeah. So proud of our 3rd and 4th graders for this informative show! They went through each of the numbers associated with the song, and explained their significance. Great job Ariella Lazaros!
