KIVUN – An After-School JEWISH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS Who Attend Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School. We began in the fall of 2013 with a K-1 class. In 2015-2016, we will have two classes: a K-1 class and a 2-3 class. Classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:15 - 5:30 pm. The children are picked up from the school and escorted by their teacher to Chabad of
the West Side, at 166 W. 97th Street. Pick up by parents will be from Chabad at 5:30 PM. Kivun is a project of Chabad of the West Side and is headed by Sarah Alevsky of Chabad Family Programs. OUR GOALS
Kivun means direction. It shares the root of the word Kavanah, which means intent and mindfulness. At Kivun, our goal to provide our students with both the knowledge they need as Jews today as well inspire them to imbue their Jewish practice with Kavanah, with meaning and intent. We will be utilizing a child-centered approach, following the language methodology of the ACTFL in teaching Hebrew, the foundation used for language acquisition and literacy in many Hebrew and other language Charter Schools. At Kivun we will...
• Focus on Israel, fostering a love of the land, state, people, history and heritage of Israel.
• Promote activities and programs that highlight Jewish ethics as it relates to the broader human experience.
• Teach Jewish literacy, including a basic understanding of and facility with prayers, blessings, Torah and Jewish literature, along with a fluency with Shabbat and holiday practices.
• Engage families with after-school activities that create a sense of community. There are scholarships available. Please contact Sarah at [email protected] or (212) 864 5010.
