*TRAINED HANDS*

*Scripture Reading:* Psalm 144:1-15

_Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle._ *(Psalm 144:1)*

David was a very skillful warrior as well as a proficient musician. He emerged first as a warrior when he went out against Goliath in that epic battle. When he engaged in that battle, he was a teenager who was not old enough to enlist in the regular army of Israel.

After winning that battle, David was made an army troop leader. His exploits as a troop leader were spectacular. From there, he went on to lead many military efforts and won almost every battle.

The impression some get when they read the story of David was that he was an untrained young man whom God just picked and used. There is a little truth in that view, but it is not the whole truth. David was not an untrained warrior.

In today’s passage, David tells us that he was trained for the tasks he undertook. Yes, he was not ready for military service and so was not enrolled in the military academy of Israel; but that should not presuppose that he was untrained. David tells us how he got his training; he was trained by God. God was his trainer. That was the secret of David’s success as a warrior; he had the best trainer!

The Lord can also train each one of us. He is willing to teach us to do the things that He has called us to do. David was trained as a warrior while watching over the sheep under his care. We can also be taught by God while serving faithfully in the field in which He has placed us.

David’s training required facing up to the challenges that came with his job, such as delivering his lambs from attacking lions and bears. God trains us by allowing challenges to come our way. When such challenges come, He wants us to trust Him for deliverance and victory.

Have you considered that God is training your hands right now? Have you considered that where

*CLEAN HANDS*

*Scripture Reading:* James 4:1-10

_Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded._ *(James 4:8)*

The focus of our study this week is on the hands. The COVID era has shown us the value of cleaning our hands. We have learnt a lot about how infected hands can get our whole lives infected. Today, it is normal for us to sanitize our hands several times a day. While we cleanse our hands from the coronavirus, we must also be mindful of cleansing ourselves from sinful contaminations.

Our passage for today is from the Epistle of James. It is a passage that carries a strong rebuke and a challenge for each one of us. The verse speaks to offending believers and calls them sinners and double-minded. James calls believers who sin, sinners; and calls believers who doubt, double-minded. Those are very strong but proper rebukes.

The Apostle James was a very practical man. His letter is the New Testament equivalent of the book of Proverbs. He focuses on the practical manifestation of the righteous life and continuously challenges believers to live out their faith.

James is very intolerant of Christians who claim to have so much faith without showing any evidence of it. Christians of today must heed the words that the Holy Spirit inspired through the Apostle James to cleanse our hands.

*Cleanse your hands.* The word, ‘hand’, is used in this verse to mean ‘actions; what you do’. To cleanse our hands, therefore, is to do the right thing or ‘get our act together’. That means, after Christ has come to live in our hearts, we must endeavour to keep our lives clean.

Believers must not accept living in sin as a regular part of their lives. Neither can we claim our position in Christ without practically living the life that Christ has given us. The verse places the responsibility on the believer to do the cleansing. It

*A MERRY HEART*

_A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones._ *(Proverbs 17:22)*

A merry heart is a joyful heart. God wants us to be happy. He wants us to enjoy the life He has given us and the world He has created. However, life on earth has many challenges. Each one of us has experienced pain, sorrow and desolation. It comes with the terrain.

Our passage today shows the kind of effect our heart has on our body’s wellbeing. The passage presents two types of hearts to us. One heart ‘does good like medicine’; the other ‘dries the bones’. In other words, one heals, and the other makes sick. We have a choice as to the kind of heart we want to have when life’s unpredictable events hit us.

*1. A merry heart.* This refers to having a cheerful attitude. This attitude does not encourage us to trivialize our experiences or ignore the realities of life. A merry heart is a heart that takes a full view of life and not just one experience.

A merry heart is a hopeful heart, grounded in the confidence of God’s goodness no matter what we go through. In the valley, the merry heart walks in God’s assurance and sings of His faithfulness.

Such an attitude brings healing to us when we are wounded. It helps us recover and bounce back from adverse situations.

*2. A broken spirit.* This refers to having a crushed attitude. This attitude allows itself to be weighed down by the burdens of life. A broken spirit refuses to hope in the Lord.

Instead, it will enable the enemy of our soul to perch on our shoulders to whisper words of despair and failure to us. A broken spirit settles itself in the valley and remembers all the wrongs that have taken place.

Such an attitude dries us up from within. It dries up all our energies and destroys our confidence in the Lord.

You have a choice. I encourage you to choose the merry heart. Rejoice in the Lord, and again, I say, r
