📚✨ Then and Now: Faith Lee ✨📚

For Faith Lee, our Primary Education Coordinator, some of her favorite childhood memories are rooted in stories, imagination, and the people who made reading feel magical. One book that especially stayed with her was the classic children’s story Corduroy — a story that taught her the importance of friendship, love, and keeping the things that matter most close to your heart. 🤎🧸

But some of the stories that shaped Faith didn’t come from library shelves at all. Growing up, her mother would turn storytelling into a game, creating fictional characters, silly names, and imaginative adventures on the spot for Faith and her siblings. Those moments sparked a creativity that has stayed with her ever since. 💫

Today, Faith says those early experiences helped shape her into an imaginative dreamer and an avid reader — and reading remains one of her favorite hobbies. ✨📖 Help us create more readers and dreamers by supporting our Beekman Kids Read campaign! Link in bio or visit ahouseonbeekman.org.

Meet Connor Hedrick, after school/summer camp leader, and reading enthusiast.📚

Despite what you see in these pictures, Connor didn’t love reading as a kid. It felt like work, something he had to do, not something he enjoyed.

But there was one book that changed everything: The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. He received it during a family move, pulled from the top of a fridge at a yard sale—and from that moment on, it became his prize possession. 🌈🐠

Connor held onto that book not just because of the story’s beauty, but because it reminded him of family. It was the first time reading felt meaningful.

Now, reading is one of Connor’s favorite ways to relax—a full-circle moment that started with just one book. 📕

At A House on Beekman, we believe every child deserves that one story—the one that sparks something lasting. 📖✨ Click link in our bio or visit ahouseonbeekman.org to support our kids and staff in unlocking the gifts of literacy!

Then & Now: Skyler Kennamer, Occupational Therapist 💫📚

Growing up, Skyler’s world was filled with books and imagination. Nearly every Sunday, her mom would take her and her sister to the local public library—a rhythm that became a foundation for her love of reading. A passionate reader herself, Skyler’s mom was always introducing them to new worlds, new characters, and new possibilities.

One story that stayed with Skyler? Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. She felt deeply connected to Opal and her unforgettable friendship with Winn-Dixie, a story full of heart, belonging, and the kind of connection that sticks with you long after the last page. 🐾

Today, Skyler brings that same sense of care, imagination, and connection into her work with our children every day. 💛

At A House on Beekman, we believe every child deserves access to stories that open their world and help them discover who they are.

Then ➡️ Now ✨ Meet our Babies to Two Coordinator, Paola Matute-Arrieta.

Then: A young girl stepping into a new world, leaving behind the comfort of her first language. Growing up in a Spanish-speaking home, moving to the U.S. meant sitting in classrooms where everything felt unfamiliar. Every word, every lesson—it was all in English. It was overwhelming, and the transition wasn’t easy.

But everything began to change with a simple gift: books. Thanks to her aunt, who ordered age-appropriate stories through Scholastic, she was introduced to the playful and imaginative world of Dr. Seuss. Page by page, word by word, she began to understand. Reading became more than learning, it became confidence. As her skills grew, so did her happiness, her voice, and her belief in herself.

Now: Paola stands as someone who turned challenge into strength. What once felt like a barrier became a bridge. Her love for reading didn’t just help her learn a language, it helped her grow, dream bigger, and expand her world.

Proof that with support, persistence, and a good book… everything can change. 📚💫 Help Paola and her colleagues do the same for the families they serve by supporting our Beekman Kids Read campaign! Link in bio or visit ahouseonbeekman.org.

📚🌻Meet our preschool and summer camp teacher, Mary Margaret Deering. Her childhood was built on books. Every night, she and her sister would climb into their mom’s bed to listen as she read everything from Today I Feel Silly to the entire Harry Potter series.

While choosing just one favorite story is impossible, Verdi by Janell Cannon has always stayed with Mary Margaret: a young yellow snake trying not to become like the older ones, only to realize that growing up doesn’t mean losing yourself.

Mary Margaret feels so lucky that books didn’t just fill her childhood, they opened her world. 🌎
