The Church of the Intercession

The Church of the Intercession A welcoming and inclusive Episcopal Church in the border of Harlem and Washington Heights. Our community is multicultural and worships in English and Spanish.

We are a community of followers of Jesus in the tradition of the Episcopal Church. As Episcopalians we strive to be a middle way between the Catholic and Protestant traditions of Christianity. At Intercession you will be surrounded by a beautiful building but more importantly in an open and welcoming community. "The Church of the Intercession in New York City, is a reconciling, affirming, and incl

usive Christian community striving through worship, love, and service to welcome all people just as God created you. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, and whether you are single, married, divorced, separated, or partnered, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we!"

World War War I Memorial Tablet
At the Church of the Intercession
Description found in the church archives.
"The War Memorial Tablet is made of Hautville marble and executed by Messrs. Peters and Humphries, of 214 East 45th Street. The border is of laurel leaves symbolic of victors in battle; appropriate whether of battles of war or of life. It contains the shields of the United States, with England, France, Italy and Belgium at the top, and Serbia and Portugal at the left hand side and Russia and Brazil at the right hand side; and in the bottom row, Australia, Canada, New Zeland and South Africa. The text at the bottom is “No greater love hath no man than this.”The heraldic colouring proper to the shields was done by William Grey, of 142 East 59th Street. The tablet was designed by Mr. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, the architect of the church, and given to the church by Mr. John E. Miller. With care tenderness of feelings and generosity Mr. Miller requested that we carve on the tablet not only the name of his own son but of his son’s friends and companions who gave their lives."
