What happens when you walk around Union Square in a sandwich board offering FREE HELP to total strangers? 🪧

Filmmaker, journalist and audio storyteller Bianca Giaever spent a month finding out: babysitting, giving relationship advice, stenciling gold fleur-de-lis on a friend’s kitchen wall and power-washing a stranger’s boat. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, This American Life, Radiolab and The New York Times.

Tomorrow she joins us for an Artist Talk in the Sanctuary, hosted by Peter Rinaldi. Come hear what drives her and what she learned about giving and asking for help in this city.

Many thanks to the talented Bo Petersen for sharing her compelling personal story, Pieces of Me: Love and Silence Under Apartheid, to open our fall season In The Sanctuary. 🙏 The evening also included a dynamic talkback and a short film about the South African organization Ikamva Labantu.

Directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra, this documentary tells the story of the Kenmure Street protests, when neighbors in Glasgow’s Pollokshields neighborhood came together in 2021 to resist a Home Office immigration raid. The film premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Award for Civil Resistance.

How do we love well in an unraveling time? 💛

In Sunday’s Biblical Meditation, Elder Christine Gorman reflects on childhood faith, golden calves and the idols we still bow to today. She reminds us that the answer doesn’t have to be complicated: call a friend, stay a few extra minutes at coffee hour, stop and watch the sunset.

When Bo Petersen was 19, she uncovered her father’s secret: he wasn’t white. Growing up in apartheid South Africa, he had married the woman he loved and lived as a white man for the rest of his life. Bo became the keeper of that secret — and Pieces of Me is her attempt to understand it.

Today’s the day! 🪕

Our director of music, Gabriel T. Evans, grew up in Pikeville, Kentucky, where his favorite event each year was the All-District Band festival. As a teenager, he dreamed of one day coming back to lead it. This past week, he did return home to Eastern Kentucky — not as a band director, but to lead the high school choral festival. In his words, one of his very first life goals has been checked off.

This afternoon, he brings a bit of those Appalachian roots to the Upper West Side. Join the Rutgers Choir and Bluegrass Ensemble for The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass by Carol Barnett, a joyful setting of the Mass with banjo, fiddle and mountain harmonies.
