Dr King was, at heart, Reverend King. In calling for inclusion in American society, Rev. King grounded his demands in the nation’s most sacred texts: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bible.

Most famously, in the historic March on Washington, Rev King delivered his rousing “I Have a Dream” speech by which we best remember him. A pastor, his speech was a call to action. He famously referred to the nation’s founding documents and the Emancipation Proclamation and also quoted this bit from Isaiah 40:

This Shabbat, January 17, come hear Dr. King's Prophetic call for justice is the musical tradition of our Prophets, Haftorah trope. Minyan M'at invites all to come hear selections from the "I Have A Dream Speech" chanted in Haftarah Trope as our Dvar Torah this week.

Join us Saturday night as we come together for Tisha B'Av, to mark the calamities of the Jewish experience. These days, it feels especially relevant.

We will daven Maariv together, have a traditional reading of Eichah/Lamentations with some modern kinot/poetry and conclude with the singing of kinot and other sad songs.

Saturday night, august 2 at 9 pm on the 5th Floor of Ansche Chesed, 100th and West End Avenue.

Looking for a place for the High Holidays that is "warm, open, caring, traditional, lively, intellectually rigorous" in the words of Terry Abramson. He came for Rosh Hashannah one year and was so impressed with the ruach--the energy in the room--that they joined very soon after.

As Terry says, Minyan M'at is not a “regular shul”. It is a tightknit community of devoted Jews who truly care for, and look out for, one another. The intellectual gravitas and commitment to struggling with texts in a warm, supportive environment reminds me of my yeshiva days (in an open, modern way).

Final Call for our Open House Shabbat tomorrow morning (Sept 14th) at Minyan M'at. If you havent been to M'at in a while (or ever), stop by to say hello.

at Ansche Chesed 100th/West End, 5th Floor. Services start at 10, with a great Dvar Torah from Rabbi Danny Nevins around 11:45 or so. Kiddush on the roof after services--looks like the weather will cooperate.
