West Side Sephardic Synagogue

West Side Sephardic Synagogue An inclusive community maintaining authentic
Sephardic traditions in the UWS Welcome to the West Side Sephardic Synagogue!

We are the first and only Magrhebi Synagogue on Manhattan's Upper West Side, where Jews from all over North Africa and the Middle East gather each week for spirited prayers, meaningful learning, and community. We are a center for Sephardic Jews of all ages, from young Jews newly arrived from Paris, to Israeli ex-pats, to families making their home here, to elderly Sephardic Jews who now have a spi

ritual home in the neighborhood. We are led by a dedicated team of volunteers and congregants, creating a grass-roots feeling to a busy synagogue. We pride ourselves on our warm and welcoming environment, our sumptuous kiddush, our daily minyan, our children's programming, our hospitality, our sense of chesed, and of course, our adherence to Sephardic Halakha, customs and culture. Please join us for an upcoming Shabbat or shiur. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our unique community.

Celebrate the women in your life and throughout history at Eldridge Street with Alhambra! Alhambra creates exciting arrangements of historical Judeo-Spanish wedding music, love songs, and instrumental dances on the oud, violin, shawm, dumbek (middle-eastern drum), riq, def, and bendir. Join us in our spectacular Main Sanctuary to experience the joy of Judeo-Spanish music, with special songs to honor Women's History Month and the Purim season.

The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the beautiful restored Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first synagogue in America purpose-built by immigrants from Eastern Europe. While its first congregants were from Russia, Poland, Lithuania and other Eastern European countries, they wanted a building that hearkened back to the Golden Age of the Jewish Diaspora in Spain and North Africa. Reminiscent of this Golden Age of Jewish History, Alhambra's story told through their music exemplifies the narrative that Eldridge Street's original congregants wanted to tell through their choice of Moorish Revival architecture.

Help brighten the days for people who are ill, homebound and isolated by extending visits in their home, to help them feel connected and comforted. Visits take place on Manhattan’s Upper East and Upper West Sides. Flexible volunteer schedule offered. If you are interested in a short-term commitment with a big impact, this is the Chesed for you! Contact Esther for details, if available @ [email protected] .Tizku Lemitzvot!

About Bikur Cholim In The Home
The Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick) In The Home Program services the elderly and people who are ill, isolated and Homebound, to help them feel connected and supported. We offer services on Shabbat and Weekly, both in private homes and in local Nursing & Rehabilitation facilities, on the Upper West Side and Upper East Side of Manhattan. Our Chesed activities range from Home Visits, Tele-Bikur Cholim, assistance with escorting & errands, and delivering food packages during holiday seasons. When necessitated by Covid, we replaced in-person Bikur Cholim with tele-visits. In these Post -Covid times, we are cautiously re-instating home visits with Covid protection measures, including wellness screenings, masks wear and social distance. If you are interested to partake in this tremendous Mitzvah or if you know someone who is, please contact Esther at [email protected]
