We need to see your Shayna Punim in person or online this Sunday (every Sunday!) at 11 a.m. And normally we spend this time and space talking about this week’s readings. But bear with us for a second, because this week we are turning our focus to some extra special prayers for one of Trinity Lutheran’s beloveds: the absurdly talented Gina Gionfriddo.
Gina is the brilliant playwright behind the hit Broadway show "Becky Shaw," at the Hayes Theater. The production is up for 2 Tonys, including Best Revival of a Play. The New York Stage Review called her script a "marvelous piece of writing" that is both "perceptive" and "brutally funny." We couldn't be more proud, she couldn’t be more deserving.
But we aren’t supposed to pray for a specific result—like a Tony statue—according to the venerable Msgr. Aloysius Schwartz: "When you pray…You should ask for the light to see the will of God, and you have to ask for the courage to be able to do the will of God." I guess that’s why I haven’t hit the lottery yet, but I digress.
So instead of praying for a trophy, we’re going to turn to a prayer of thanksgiving as a modest way of influencing the Tony voting:
“Dear God, fan of stage and screen that You are, we give thanks that Gina writes intriguing, fluid dialogue. We give thanks that she creates complex characters that can be hesitantly endearing or attractively despicable. We give thanks that her actors made the characters very real, sometimes frighteningly so. Very importantly, Lord, we give thanks upon thanks that Nathan Lane doesn’t need another Tony Award, and really, there’s been four iterations of Death of a Salesman over the last decade anyway. How many times must we mourn W***y Loman already? Anyway, the end result seems obvious to us (wink wink), but we’ll leave that in your all-knowing hands. Amen.”
We are so proud of Gina and her daughter Ava, and celebrate the fact that she is one of our many souls in this unique, beautiful, talented, and gracious community. Bring home the hardware, Gina, we’ll build the book shelves.
See you Sunday at 11 a.m., 70 minute running time, no intermission, bread and wine are always free:
