Journalists need to be aware that they write in a postsecular world. The secularists lost their firm grip on the public square. Simple "objectivity" is an incomplete methodology that privileges journalists and secular discourse. Journalists always bring their values and biased perceptions into the reporting and interviews. Denying this has just discredited journalism. Rather, the journalist must first admit that he or she needs corrections to their false ideas and perceptions, then can offer corrections to the interviewees, who then can come back with theirs. All of this process must be reported or else it is just the journalist playing the role of a despotic King declaring that their words are "all the news that is fit to print." However, there are many questions unanswered by the incompleteness theorem of journalism.

Both voices in that Munich dialogue have now fallen silent. What they proved still speaks: that the deepest disagreements are met not by tribal victory but by the willingness of each side to listen for what the other knows that it does not.

Restitution, for instance, for Stan Wischnowski, the top editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who in 2020 had to resign from his job and issue a groveling apology for the sin of running an article by the paper’s architecture critic with the headline “Buildings Matter, Too.” Restitution for Mike Pesca, the host of a popular podcast, “The Gist,” who was suspended indefinitely from his job at Slate for making a case, in an interoffice back and forth, that it may sometimes be permissible for a non-Black person to quote a racial slur in narrow contexts. Restitution, yes, for James Bennet, a former editor of The Times’s Opinion section, who was forced from his job after the publication of a controversial guest essay by Tom Cotton, a Republican senator.

The damage was real and long-lasting.

“Retro Flashes” are Journey’s quick takes on moments of history that have made New York City what it is, what New Yorkers are, and, maybe, what it will be. In August 1657, the noisy, exuberant Quakers arrive street preaching the Day of the Lord. The two women evangelists shouted out the latest word on the Coming of Jesus, then disappeared to "the suburbs" before the stuffed shirt authorities could arrest them.
