Metropolitan New York Synod Mission Forward
www.mnys.org
www.linktr.ee/metronysynod We are the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Our hands.

Rooted in Christ, we celebrate diversity and walk alongside nearly 200 congregations across New York City, Long Island, and seven upstate counties. Guided by Bishop Rev. Dr. Katrina Foster, we worship God, serve neighbors, feed the hungry, seek justice, and advocate for peace. As Lutherans, we live out our call with the promise: God’s work. Together, we are the church—joyfully living out God’s mission in the world.

This month, as AANHPI Heritage Month draws to a close, we're launching Faces of Faith — a new MNYS video series — with a visit to St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Sunset Park is a vibrant immigrant neighborhood where Asian residents make up approximately 43% of the population, with people from across the world making new homes for themselves and their families. Recognizing the particular needs of Chinese communities in Brooklyn and beyond, St. Jacobi chose to center its ministry around Mandarin-language liturgy. Many Chinese-American workers are employed in construction and food service — industries where Sunday morning is often the busiest or only day off. So St. Jacobi holds liturgies on Monday and Tuesday mornings, welcoming workers when they can actually worship.

Find a free congregation discussion guide at https://www.mnys.org/assets/1/6/stjacobidiscussionguide.pdf. We hope you'll watch, share with your neighbors, and reimagine what ministry can look like in your own community.

Today is Pentecost.

O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. —Bread for the Day

Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry has released a statement on the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

“As the ELCA, we must speak plainly: violence rooted in hatred is sin. We condemn Islamophobia and acknowledge its rise in recent years. Our church affirms that “anti-Muslim hatred is antithetical to our Christian faith” (A Declaration of the ELCA to the Muslim Community), for we are called to love our neighbor in ways that cast out fear (1 John 4:18).”

Last month, Bishop Foster joined Randy Cohen at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Times Square for an engaging and thoughtful discussion. You can listen at the link in our bio.

We also especially encourage you to tune in when it airs on the radio. It will broadcast here in New York this Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM on WNYE, 91.5 FM, and more broadly Friday night at 10:30 across WAMC Northeast Public Radio.

Part 2 is coming next week, so join us again as Bishop Foster and Randy continue their important and timely conversation.
