On Friday April 10, join us for an Easter symphony at Old St. Patrick's in SoHo on Friday, April 10. It features a 60-member orchestra, including many Juilliard musicians, performing Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Dvořák in a Catholic context.

The theme is “Ever Ancient, Ever New,” featuring leading Catholic composer Frank La Rocca, who will be visiting. Below is more information, and hope to see you there.

We think this hasn't been done in New York City in a long time. Or ever.

On February 26 at Blessed Sacrament, The Higher Word Orchestra will be playing Mozart’s Requiem in its entirety to accompany a Solemn High Mass celebrated by Fr. Brian Graebe for the repose of the soul of Alex Klucik. While many people are familiar with Mozart's masterpiece, they may be accustomed to listening to it out of context. Mozart's masterpiece was written for liturgical use, and this orchestral performance is a rare opportunity to hear this landmark of the classical repertoire in its spiritual home, the Mass.

National Catholic Register recently featured Higher Word in a piece exploring how sacred music is being revived across the country.

Last week, more than four hundred people filled St. Anthony’s Church in Soho for our All Hallows symphony event. Over fifty musicians performed works by Mozart, Beethoven, and other great Catholic composers. It was a night where sacred music met the city, and beauty pointed hearts toward heaven.

Happy All Saints Day.

The apostolates that have taken up this task of sanctifying culture through art and music reveal that music is not an accompaniment to mission. It is mission.

The Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd is one of great feast days of the church year and it marks 40 days since Christmas. It’s the day when Mary and Joseph fulfill Jewish law, which says that a first-born son must be dedicated to God. 40 days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple and it’s also the rite of Mary’s purification. After giving birth, a Jewish woman had to be declared clean; ritually pure, in order to resume public worship. Simeon, as we hear in the Gospel, declares that this Christ child is a light of revelation to the Gentiles.

Jesus is the light of the world, born at the darkest time of the year. And now, we notice the days get longer. For all the meaning and richness of the feast, we look at our part, and what we can extract from the examples that Jesus and Mary gave us. , ,

People often overlook what follows Christmas Day. But there is something the Church is trying to tell us by following Christmas Day with the Feast of St. Stephen. Why do we move from this lovely feast of baby Jesus to the feast of a martyr? We'll look into it in our latest episode with Fr. Graebe.
