We are deeply grateful to Dr. Robert F. Reid-Pharr for sharing his wisdom, insight, and reflection on faith, the voice of James Baldwin, and the call toward communal belonging.

Our sincere thanks also go to our partners at Central Synagogue and St. Bartholomew’s Church for helping make this evening of learning, conversation, and community possible. At a time when questions of identity, faith, democracy, and belonging continue to shape our shared life, we are grateful for spaces where we can gather across traditions to listen, reflect, and imagine together.

Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, and contributed to the conversation. We carry these reflections with us as we continue building a more compassionate and connected community.

Saint Peter’s is the “First Church of Jazz” due to its long and continuing welcome to jazz musicians and lovers of jazz. The centerpiece of jazz at Saint Peter’s is our Sunday, 5:00 p.m. Jazz Vespers service which has been running continually since 1965.

The evening begins with a reception at 6:00 PM, followed by Dr. Robert F. Reid-Pharr’s presentation, Q&A, and conversation at 6:30 PM. Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, Dr. Reid-Pharr will reflect on the faith and voice of James Baldwin and explore what it means to cultivate a “civic faith” rooted in communal belonging.

Together, we will engage themes of race, religion, sexuality, democracy, and belonging, drawing wisdom from Baldwin’s life and enduring relevance as we seek to deepen our shared sense of community.

Hosted by Saint Peter’s Church in partnership with Central Synagogue and St. Bart’s. Spanish translation of Dr. Reid-Pharr’s remarks will be available.

All are welcome.
