Reverend Christella Watts went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday. We honor and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman of God, a worshiper, social advocate and a trailblazer in her own right, becoming the first woman ordained as a minister at Thessalonia. Her legacy will continue to impact generations to come.

She was passionate about God’s Word and unwavering in her pursuit of Jesus. She challenged those around her to be authentic in their faith and intentional in their relationship with Christ. Through her leadership, service, compassion, and bold witness, she touched countless lives and pointed many to the Savior she loved so deeply.

While our hearts grieve her absence, we find comfort in knowing that she is now in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7

Her life was a testament to faith, love, justice, and worship. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Well done, good and faithful servant.

Life & Legacy:
Deaconess Esther Ann Godfrey, age 96, of the Bronx, New York, departed this life on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Kings Harbor Nursing Home. She was born Esther Ann Logan on October 18, 1929, in Buchanan, Virginia, to the late Charlie E. Logan and Esther Ann Logan.
She was the youngest of eleven children, all of whom preceded her in death.
Deaconess Godfrey received her education in Buchanan, Virginia, where she attended Buchanan High School. After graduating, she relocated to the Bronx, New York, where she met and married the love of her life, Johnny L. Godfrey. From this union, three sons were born: George
W. Godfrey, John L. Godfrey, Jr., and Francis N. Godfrey. She was a devoted wife and mother, and her marriage of over 50 years stood as a testament to her love and commitment to family.
Esther began her professional career working at Macy's and later transitioned into healthcare, where she served compassionately as a Health Care Aide.
On April 5, 1953, she received the Right Hand of Fellowship at Thessalonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. James A. Polite. Over the years, Deaconess Godfrey served faithfully and diligently in many capacities within the church. Her service included the Deaconess Board, Missionary Crusaders Ministry, Sanctuary Choir (where she was also a soloist), Cultural Community Center (Chairperson), Mission Finance, PFL Ministry, Pulpit Committee, BTU, Sunday School, and Women's Ministry. She also played an instrumental role in the pastoral search committee that welcomed Rev. Dr. Shellie Sampson, Jr. as pastor.
Deaconess Godfrey had a deep love for music ministry. She was a devoted member of the Sanctuary Choir and was often blessed to sing solos. Her passion for gospel music extended beyond her home church—she contributed to organizing the TWCCleveland Concert at Madison Square Garden. She also faithfully attended the Gospel Music Workshop of America each year and shared her gift in song with Jerusalem.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her three sons: George W. Godfrey (Willie Mae) of South Carolina, John L. Godfrey, Jr., and Francis N. Godfrey of the Bronx, New York; one granddaughter, Gorgiaree Godfrey; one grandson, William Godfrey; one great-grandson, Aiden;
