Throughout his writing career, author Lawrence Wright has often explored subjects who belong to somewhat-isolated communities, be it Scientologists in “Going Clear” or terrorists and the intelligence community in his Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Looming Tower.” And so, while on a walk with a friend whose mother is a leader in Catholic prison ministry, he heard about a connection between two other communities who were set apart from the world: seven death row inmates in a nearby Texas prison and the order of cloistered Sisters who befriended them. That story became his latest book, “Redemption: Faith, Justice, and Sisterhood on Death Row,” and we discussed it recently on “Christopher Closeup." Link to read or listen in first comment:

We usually think of prayer as a quiet, solitary experience, but Eric Clayton believes that it can lead us to a more adventurous life. He explained, “I have found that the movement from status quo to discomfort is essential in prayer, in our spiritual lives. God tries to shake us loose…in those quiet moments of prayer, based on what we’re reading: a line of Scripture sings to us or a book we’re praying with grabs us. And I think it grabs us because we’re stuck somewhere in our own lives and the Spirit is saying, ‘Hey, what if you took a step into the unknown? “If you can help me get a job, I won’t sell drugs.” Early in her career as a corrections officer for youth, Teresa Goines heard this statement from numerous young people who wanted to follow the right path once they got out of jail. But they were not given any opportunities to make money legally so they often turned back to the crimes for which they got arrested. Through a lot of prayer and hard work, Teresa created those opportunities herself through a unique nonprofit business – a San Francisco supper club named Old Skool Cafe – that continues to serve as a beacon of hope for formerly incarcerated young people and at-risk youth. Joe LaHood grew up in somewhat unusual circumstances. His parents, Dan and Cubby, turned their Maryland home into a daycare center that welcomed children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and they named it St. Joseph’s House. As a result, Joe and his siblings developed a closeness to a group of people that society often prefers to hide away. In recent years, Joe and his wife Natalie took over the the running of St. Joseph’s House, moving it into their own home, where they are raising their five children. Joe and Natalie joined us on “Christopher Closeup” to discuss their work, how it serves as an extension of their faith, and how it reflects a slice of heaven on earth.
