Temple Emanu-El

Temple Emanu-El Welcome to Temple Emanu-El, a bold Reform congregation where warmth and majesty meet. Its odyssey mirrors that of the Jewish community in New York.
(337)

Like all sanctuaries, Temple Emanu-El is a visible token of the presence of God in the midst of His people. It sheds a beauty that is the beauty of holiness, and it stands as a beacon light in a tradition that stands as a champion of justice, brotherhood and peace. Founded in 1845, Temple Emanu-El is the third oldest Reform Jewish congregation in the United States. Originally located on a remote c

orner on the Lower East Side, it moved progressively, both geographically and spiritually, further uptown, and is now located in the very heart of New York City, on the Upper East Side.

We learned so much from an inspiring conversation between Rabbi Tamar Manasseh and Dr. Susannah Heschel, moderated by Alvin Patrick, Executive Producer at CBS News.

Together, they explored the state of Blackโ€“Jewish relations, the power of genuine allyship, and the importance of creating a more just and connected future.

Stay tuned for details about upcoming sessions. We look forward to continuing the conversation.

Shabbat Shalom! Tonight we welcome special guests Rabbi Tamar Manasseh and Dr. Susannah Heschel in a conversation moderated by Alvin Patrick for the inaugural session of our "Shared Histories, Shared Futures" series to discuss the past, present, and future of Black-Jewish relations.

Tonight, as we gather with our families and loved ones to welcome Shabbat, many of us will recite the Priestly Blessing over our children: words of love, protection, and peace passed down through generations.

As you gather around your Shabbat table, we hope Cantor Mo Glazman's beautiful rendition of Bob Dylan's โ€œForever Young,โ€ inspired by the Priestly Blessing, brings warmth to your home, peace to your heart, and blessings to all who gather with you. Shabbat Shalom!

โ€œI think itโ€™s important for both of us [Jews and Blacks] to create alliances with each other and try to regain some of the power and moral respect we need in our society,โ€ said Dr. Susannah Heschel ahead of Fridayโ€™s Shared Histories, Shared Futures Initiative Launch.

Dr. Heschel will discuss the state of Blackโ€“Jewish relations with Rabbi Tamar Manasseh, the first woman ordained by the International Israelite Board of Rabbis and a social justice leader, in a conversation moderated by Alvin Patrick, Executive Producer at CBS News.
