On the feast day of the Three Holy Hierarchs, the Primate of the Russian Church Abroad celebrated Divine Liturgy and performs the consecration of Archimandrite Spyridon (Gusakov) as Vicar of the Canadian Diocese

On Thursday, 12 February, 2026, the feast day of the Three Holy Hierarchs, St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, celebrated Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral at the eponymous monastery in Jordanville, NY. Holy Trinity Seminary, located on site, celebrates its heavenly patrons on this day.

Joining the Metropolitan was His Eminence His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada, His Grace Bishop Kliment of Levski (Bulgarian Orthodox Church) and His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse, His Grace Bishop Jerome, along with Archimandrite Michael (Crowley), nominated to be Bishop of Boston and Vicar of the Eastern American Diocese. They were joined by the monastic fathers, seminary instructors and visiting clergymen.

During the usual time of Divine Liturgy, Archimandrite Spyridon (Gusakov) was consecrated to the episcopacy.

After the end of divine services, the Primate offered words of advice to the new Bishop of Toronto and entrusted him with the episcopal staff.

As part of tradition, the newly-consecrated bishop delivered a sermon and offered his first archpastoral blessing to those in attendance.

The following is Metropolitan Nicholas’ sermon:

Your Grace, Bishop Spyridon, beloved brother in the Lord!

God’s grace, which overshadowed you today in the Sacrament of hierarchal consecration, has placed you as bishop over the God-preserved city of Toronto. Through the laying on of hands and the prayers of the successors of the Apostles, you too have received the Apostolic gift.

Henceforth, you are called to administer the vicariate of the Canadian Diocese, to proclaim the Gospel, and through the prayer of the Church to call down God’s grace and blessing upon the faithful. You have received the right to attend to the salvation of the human race: to teach, to guide, and to spiritually nourish the clergy and confirm the laity in the Faith of Christ.

Throughout the course of many years, God’s most-wise Providence prepared you for this glorious event, trying the resolution of your faith and obedience during the time of your service as rector of the Church of the Holy Hierarch John, Archbishop of Shanghai and Wonderworker of San Francisco, in the city of Calgary. There you labored much for the glory of Christ the Savior, of Christ’s Holy Church, and for the sake of your flock: you served, preached, comforted, and spiritually guided, you led pilgrimages with your flock to the Orthodox churches and monasteries of America and to the holy places of Europe.

Saint John of Shanghai understood the episcopacy not as an honor, but as a difficult obedience to the Church and as a cross demanding total commitment. The holy hierarch himself was an example of ascetic endurance and a strict life, often spending entire nights in prayer.

For him, the episcopacy meant serving the people: in China, Europe, and America; it meant care for the spiritual condition of every one of his children, and not administrative authority. By his personal example, Saint John showed that the bishop is the “servant of all” and that his life must be entirely dedicated to God and man.

Understand you likewise the episcopacy that has been given to you. And He Who today gives you the obedience of archpastor will also unfailingly grant you the strength to fulfill it.

And remember: nothing is fearful for him puts his hope in God. Pray as though you are speaking directly to God, to the Most Holy Theotokos, to the angels and saints. In purity of heart, make your fervent prayer for the peace of the whole world and the good estate of the Holy Churches of God, and call on your flock to live in all piety and purity, to labor with love, humility, and spiritual joy, and to be an example to their neighbors.

Kindle the grace-filled gift you have received, perfecting yourself in love, which “suffereth long… is kind… envieth not… seeketh not its own, is not easily provoked… beareth all things… endureth all things” (I Corinthians 13:4-5,7).

Let even that which seems trifling, yet concerns your service as a vicar bishop, escape not your archpastoral gaze. I sincerely hope to find in you a good and faithful fellow laborer in Canada.

Remember your predecessors in the Canadian Diocese: Bishop Alexander (Nemolovsky), who together with the great Metropolitan Anastassy (Gribanovsky) took part in the work of the 1923 Pan-Orthodox Congress, after which he moved to the Russian Skete of Saint Andrew on Mount Athos; Archbishop Joasaph (Skorodumov), who is honored in our Church as a great ascetic laborer and man of prayer in Canadian Rus’; Bishop Sava (Saracevic), a fellow initiate and biographer of Saint John’s; Metropolitan Vitaly (Ustinov), who labored over the course of many years in that country; Archbishop Gabriel, who currently governs the diocese, as well as Metropolitan Hilarion, who was born in Canada not far from the place of your parochial service.

Embark now with spiritual joy on the labors in Christ’s Vineyard, where there is much to be done, and many laborers are summoned.

Receive this staff as a support in the archpastoral service entrusted to you, and bless God’s people, who have prayerfully taken part in your hierarchal consecration.

В четверг, 12 февраля, в праздник Трех Святителей: Василия Великого, Григория Богослова и Иоанна Златоуста, Высокопреосвященнейший Николай, митрополит Восточно-Американский и Нью-Йоркский Николай совершил Божественную литургию в соборном храме Свято-Троицкой обители в Джорданвилле. В этот день Свято-Троицкая Духовная Семинария празднует память своих небесных покровителей.

Его Высокопреосвященству сослужили архиепископ Монреальский и Канадский Гавриил, епископы Левкийский Климент (Болгарская Православная Церковь) и Сиракузский Лука, пребывающий на покое епископ Иероним (Шо), архимандрит Михаил (Краули), избранный во епископа Бостонского, викария Восточно-Американской епархии; духовенство Восточно-Американской, Канадской и Западно-Американской епархий, братия обители, преподаватели семинарии и гости в священном сане.

В положенное время за Божественной литургией была совершена архиерейская хиротония архимандрита Спиридона (Гусакова).
По окончании богослужения Первоиерарх Русской Зарубежной Церкви напутствовал епископа Торонтского Спиридона на служение и вручил ему архиерейский жезл.

По традиции новохиротонисанный епископ преподал верующим свое первое архипастырское благословение.

Преосвященнейший епископ Спиридон, возлюбленный о Господе собрат!

Благодать Божия, осенившая тебя сегодня в Таинстве архиерейской хиротонии, поставила тебя епископом богоспасаемого града Торонто. Через рукоположение и молитву преемников апостолов и ты получил дар апостольский.

Отныне ты призван управлять викариатством Канадской епархии, возвещать Евангелие, молитвой Церкви низводить на верных благодать и благословение Божие. Ты получил право заботиться о спасении рода человеческого: учить, направлять и духовно окормлять духовенство, утверждать мирян в вере Христовой.

Премудрый Божий Промысл на протяжении многих лет приуготовлял тебя к этому славному событию, испытывая твердость твоей веры и послушания во время служения настоятелем храма святителя Иоанна, архиепископа Шанхайского, Сан-Францисского чудотворца, в городе Калгари. Там ты много потрудился во славу Христа Спасителя, Святой Христовой Церкви и ради твоей паствы: служил, проповедывал, утешал и духовно направлял, паломничал со своей паствой по православных храмам и монастырям Америки и святыням Европы.

Святитель Шанхайский Иоанн воспринимал епископство не как почесть, а как тяжелое церковное послушание и крест, требующий полной самоотдачи. Сам святитель являл пример аскетической стойкости, строгой жизни, часто молился ночами.

Епископство для него было служением людям: в Китае, Европе, Америке, заботой о духовном состоянии каждого его чада, а не административной властью. Своим личным примером святитель Иоанн показывал, что епископ – это “слуга всех” и жизнь его полностью посвящена Богу и людям.

Восприми и ты так же подаваемое тебе епископство. А подавший тебе сегодня послушание архипастыря непременно подаст тебе и силы для его совершения.

И помни, что ничего не страшно уповающему на Бога. Сам же молись так, будто говоришь с Богом, Пресвятой Богородицей, ангелами и святыми. Совершай в чистоте сердца горячую молитву о мире всего мира, благостоянии Святых Божиих Церквей, призывай паству жить во всяком благочестии и чистоте, с любовью, смирением и духовной радостью трудиться и быть примером для ближних.

Возгревай полученный тобой благодатный дар, совершенствуй себя в любви, которая долготерпит, милосердствует... не завидует... не ищет своего, не раздражается... все покрывает... все переносит (1 Кор. 13, 4-5).

Пусть от твоего архипастырского внимания не ускользает даже то, что кажется мелочью, но что имеет отношение к твоему служению викарного епископа. Искренне надеюсь обрести в твоем лице доброго и верного соработника в Канаде.
Поминай своих предшественников в Канадской епархии: епископа Александра (Немоловского), вместе с великим митрополитом Анастасием (Грибановским) участвовавшего в работе Всеправославного совещания 1923 года и после оного переехавшего в Русский Андреевский скит на Афоне; почитаемого в Церкви нашей архиепископа Иоасафа (Скородумова), большого подвижника и молитвенника Канадской Руси; епископа Савву (Сарачевича), сотаинника и жизнеописателя святителя Иоанна; митрополита Виталия (Устинова), в течение многих лет усердно трудившегося в этой стране; возглавляющего сегодня епархию архиепископа Гавриила, а также родившегося в Канаде недалеко от места твоего приходского служения митрополита Илариона.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad heads the Rite of Nomination of Archimandrite Spyridon (Gusakov) as Bishop of Toronto, Vicar of the Canadian Diocese

On Wednesday, 11 February, 2026, His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, led the rite of nomination of Archimandrite Spyridon (Gusakov) as Bishop of Toronto, Vicar Bishop of the Canadian Diocese.

The rite of nomination is being performed upon the decision of Synod of Bishops of 11 December, 2025.

The following sermon was delivered during the service:

Your Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas,
Your Eminences and Your Graces,
Most Reverend Fathers,

By the will of God and by the decision of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, the rite of the nomination of my unworthy self to episcopal service is now being performed—so that I may be able to bend my shoulders beneath the good yoke of Christ and receive the most exalted and responsible lot of archpastoral grace.

Your Eminences and Your Graces, holy Hierarchs of Christ!
With fear and trepidation I stand before you today, before the lot of this great ministry, “not gainsaying in the least.” The Lord Himself by His love for me, a sinner, and His All Good Providence toward me, the unworthy, moves me to approach this Mystery by awakening in my heart a reciprocal love for my Creator and Provider, and encouraging me to respond in agreement to His sweetest voice calling “Lovest thou Me? Feed My sheep.” (John 21:16).

I understand that the episcopacy is, first and foremost and above all, not power or honor, but a work of labor and spiritual struggle. Being chosen is the mercy of God, yet at the same time a heavy cross. If the Christian life is the bearing of the cross, then episcopal ministry is co crucifixion with Christ. One cannot help but remember the deeply moving words of Saint Mitrophan of Voronezh: “The episcopacy is co crucifixion with Christ upon the Cross, and from the Cross one does not descend.” It is the Cross that I see before me at the very heart of episcopal ministry: the Cross upon which I must crucify my own will and passions, self love and pride, self opinion and self confidence.
Anyone who wishes to become a successor of the Apostles must be prepared to drink the cup that Christ drank, and not think of sitting in glory at His right hand or His left.

I lay my life before your holiness in total and sacrificial dedication to Christ, the Chief Shepherd and Savior of the world. I know my weakness. I know that it is impossible for a man to bear this cross by himself unless the Lord grants him strength and fortitude. Yet in His help, His mercy, and His love I trust and dare to embark upon the path of episcopal ministry, for the grace and prayers of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, the prayers of the archpastors of the Holy Synod of Bishops, inspire me and mysteriously lead me toward receiving the special grace of apostolic succession. Blessed Augustine called the Creator “the Most Distant—and the Most Near.” The Most Distant—for created beings; the Most Near—for those who love Him with all their heart and soul, their entire strength and mind. The Most Near—for He has embraced the human race with His love, being Himself Love, extended unto the Incarnation and the Cross—“for us men and for our salvation.”

The greatness of episcopal ministry fills me with awe, for “unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more” (Luke 12:48). Yet I am consoled by the words of the Lord, spoken before His Ascension to the Apostles—and therefore also to their successors: “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20). In my human weakness, I feel anxious of the ministry that lies ahead, yet before you, vladykos blessed with godly wisdom, I confess my hope and trust in the grace of God, which “always heals what is infirm and supplies what is lacking”.

Now as I see my entire life in my mind’s eye, I, above all, offer praise to God, the Creator of all that is good, Who, caring for and establishing His beloved inheritance, the Holy Church (Rite of the Triumph of Orthodoxy), has granted me a chance to be a part of it since my childhood and have the opportunity to attend the divine services in the Holy Trinity–St. Sergius Lavra. Many times I have experienced the patience of God, and being guided by His teachings, I have come to understand that nothing happens by chance; all is governed by the Lord, Who guides one to salvation through various paths, as the Holy Prophet David the Psalmist says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Ps. 36:23).

My soul is filled with gratitude to the Most Holy Theotokos, whose protection I have always felt and continue to feel throughout my life.
On this sacred day there is a good tradition for the candidate to remember with kind words those who are dear to him and who have played a significant role in his life and in shaping him. I too want to follow this tradition, for my heart is filled with love, respect, and gratitude toward these people.

I am grateful to my parents. They raised me and taught me moral principles not only through words but also by the example of their hardworking life, their sincere love, humility, and patient endurance of sorrows.

Recalling the words of the Apostle Paul, “Remember them which have the rule over you” (Heb. 13:7), I wish to express my gratitude and prayerfully remember my spiritual mentors and teachers. Their sacrificial service to the Church and their sincere devotion to the work of the Gospel has always inspired me in my labors. One of them was Archimandrite Naum (Baiborodin), a monk of the Holy Trinity–St. Sergius Lavra, who is no longer with us. I took my first steps on the path of my spiritual development. Through my conversations with him I first began to think about monasticism, and although at that time I had not yet fully understood or embraced the monastic life, even then, deep within, I felt that this was what my soul desired and sought, and that the Lord, through His love for me, was leading me toward spiritual growth, the knowledge of truth, and union with Him.

Upon my arrival in Canada, in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Montreal, His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada turned his archpastoral attention toward me, choosing me as his subdeacon, and later ordaining me to the diaconate and priesthood. Under his attentive archpastoral care and guidance I grew first as a subdeacon and then as a clergyman, and in him I always found fatherly concern.

I thank the Lord that in 2009 He led me to the Holy Trinity Monastery, our ‘Lavra Abroad,’ where I always received the spiritual support I needed, and where I was ordained to the priesthood and, with the blessing of Archbishop Gabriel, tonsured by Bishop Luke of Syracuse into the lesser schema with the name Spyridon, in honor of St. Spyridon of Trimythous. I am deeply grateful to the instructors of our Holy Trinity Seminary, who introduced me to the mysterious and consoling world of theology. And it so happens that my consecration is taking place on the Feast of the Three Great Ecumenical Teachers and Hierarchs—Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom—who are the heavenly patrons of our seminary.

I thank His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas and all the archpastors of our Church, who have entrusted me with such great honor and appointed me to the great archpastoral service in the Church of Christ.

With gratitude, I address His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church for approving the decision of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Russian Church Abroad regarding my election as bishop.

A bishop is the shepherd of his flock, their guardian and guide into the Kingdom of God. The words of the Apostle Peter remain relevant today: “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2–3). The service of a bishop is noble and responsible; it requires one’s complete dedication, full exertion of spiritual strength, and a constant pursuit of moral perfection. A bishop must hold “the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience” (1 Tim. 3:9); his way of life must be consistent with the doctrine he preaches, and his conscience must be clear of anything that might hinder God’s divine grace acting through him. St. Isidore of Pelusium said, “A bishop must be adorned with every virtue, and must regard the misfortunes of others as his own; he lives not for himself but for those entrusted to him, and his life is examined by thousands of eyes and tongues.”

I thank the archpastors present here, who have left their beneficial and manifold labors for the glory of Christ and His Holy Church, which He obtained through His Precious Blood, and who, “as the apostles from the ends of the earth, gathered here,” have come to participate in my Pentecost. I ask for your blessing for the feat that lies ahead, I beg you not to abandon me in your prayers as the least among the brethren, who has resolved to take upon himself the yoke of archpastoral service, accepting with humility the high honor of the episcopacy to which I am now called to by the Holy Spirit through the election of Your Eminence and the Synod of Bishops.
“At these words I hold but one thing in mind and heart: let the will of God be done!”—thus concluded Saint Theophan the Recluse; and I, the unworthy one, repeat these words.

My soul is troubled at this moment, and the importance of my future service overwhelms my mind. Yet I am moved by the words of our Lord Jesus Christ “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”(John 15:16).

The importance of episcopal ministry is, above all, the biggest responsibility before God for the flock, the enlightenment of their souls with the light of the Gospel, and their growth in Christian virtues. Saint John Chrysostom reminds us of this, saying that “he who has received the episcopacy, as much as he has ascended to a higher degree, so much stricter an account will he give.” (St. John Chrysostom, Homily on the Parable of the Servant Who Owed Ten Thousand Talents and Demanded a Hundred Denarii (Matt. 18:23–35). I bear this in mind and recognize the full seriousness of my new ministry. I dare to believe that the Lord, Who has called me to this new, important, and responsible ministry, will, in answer to your prayers, holy hierarchs of God, strengthen me and make me worthy to be “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15).

I praise the God glorified in the Trinity for all the mercies bestowed upon me, the unworthy, in past years—for all the instructions and consolations that strengthen me in the feat of the service that lies ahead. And I wish to say with the Apostle Paul, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Phil. 4:13). I place all my hope in the Lord and believe that the grace of the consecration will strengthen me in my future archpastoral service.

I ask and entreat You, Your Eminences and Your Graces, archpastors, blessed with godly wisdom, to pray for me so that the Lord may grant me, through the Mystery of Consecration, the divine grace and strength that “is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9), that this grace may strengthen me for the feat ahead, and that my future ministry may serve for my salvation and for the salvation of the flock entrusted to my care, unto the attainment of eternal life in the Heavenly Kingdom.

В среду, 11 февраля, в соборном храме Свято-Троицкого монастыря в Джорданвилле (Нью-Йорк) митрополит Восточно-Американский и Нью-Йоркский Николай возглавил чин наречения архимандрита Спиридона (Гусакова) во епископа Торонтского, викария Канадской епархии.

Его Высокопреосвященству сослужили архиепископ Монреальский и Канадский Гавриил, епископы Левкийский Климент (Болгарская Православная Церковь) и Сиракузский Лука.

Чин наречения архимандрита Спиридона (Гусакова) был совершен в соответствии с определением Архиерейского Синода, принятым 11 декабря минувшего года.

При наречении архимандрит Спиридон произнес следующую речь:

Ваше Высокопреосвященство, Высокопреосвященнейший Владыко!
Ваши Высокопреосвященство и Преосвященства, всечестные отцы!

Изволением Божиим, решением Священного Архиерейского Синода Русской Зарубежной Церкви совершается ныне наречение моего смирения на епископское служение, — дабы возмог я приклонить рамена свои под благое иго Христово и восприять высочайший и ответственейший жребий архипастырской благодати.

Вaше Высокопреосвященство и Ваши Высокопреосвященство и Преосвященства, Святители Христовы! Со страхом и трепетом я сегодня предстою пред вами, пред жребием сего великого служения, « нимало вопреки глаголя». Приступить к сему таинству, побуждает меня Господь Своей Любовью ко мне, грешному, и Всеблагий Его Промысл о мне, недостойном, оживляя в моем сердце ответную любовь к моему Создателю и Промыслителю, побуждая согласием ответить на сладчайший Его глас, призывающий: «аще любиши Мя… паси овцы Моя» (Ин. 21, 16).

Разумею, что епископство есть прежде всего и более всего не власть и почесть, а дело труда и подвига. Избранничество есть милость Божия, но вместе с тем и тяжелый крест. Если жизнь христианская — это несение креста, то епископское служение — это сораспятие Христу. Невольно вспоминаются проникновенные слова святителя Митрофана Воронежского: «Епископство есть сораспятие Христу на Кресте, а с Креста не сходят». Именно Крест вижу я пред собою в самом центре епископского служения: Крест, на котором мне предстоит распинать свою волю и свои страсти, самолюбие и гордыню, самомнение и самоуверенность.

Желающий стать преемником апостолов должен быть готов пить чашу, которую пил Христос, и не помышлять о том, чтобы сесть во славе по правую или по левую сторону от Христа.

Приношу пред Вашей Святыней свою жизнь на всецелое и жертвенное посвящение Пастыреначальнику и Спасителю мира Христу. Знаю свою немощь. Знаю, что невозможно человеку самому понести сей крест, если только не Господь дарует крепость и силы. Но в уповании на Его помощь, Его милосердие и Его любовь дерзаю вступить на стезю епископского служения, ибо благоволение и молитвы Русской Зарубежной Церкви, молитвы архипастырей Священного Синодa вдохновляют меня и тайноводствуют к приятию сугубой благодати апостольского преемства. Блаженный Августин наименовал Творца «Самым Далеким — и Самым Близким». Самый Далекий — для тварных; Самый Близкий — для возлюбивших Его всем сердцем и всею душею, и всею крепостию, и всем помышлением своим. Самый Близкий — ибо объял человеческий род Своею любовью, будучи Сам Любовь, простершаяся на воплощение и Крест — «нас ради человек и нашего ради спасения».

Величие епископского служения приводит меня в трепет, потому что «от всякого, кому дано много, много и потребуется; и кому много вверено, с того больше взыщут» (Лк. 12:48), но при этом утешают слова Господа, которые Он сказал перед Своим Вознесением апостолам, а значит, и их преемникам: «Я с вами во все дни до скончания века» (Мф. 28, 20). По немощи человеческой испытываю волнение перед предстоящим служением, но и открыто богомудрые владыки, исповедую надежду и упование на благодать Божию, «немощная врачующую и оскудевающая восполняющую».

Ныне, когда перед моим мысленным взором предстоит вся моя жизнь, наипаче воздаю хвалу «Виновнику всех благ Богу, Который, промышляя и утверждая возлюбленное Свое достояние — Святую Церковь» (Чин Торжества Православия) — сподобил меня с детского возраста быть ее частью, иметь восможность посещать богослужения в Троице-Сергиевой Лавре. Много раз я испытывал долготерпение Божие и, будучи научен вразумлением Его, приходил к заключению, что ничего не бывает случайного, всем управляет Господь, разными путями ведущий человека ко спасению, как сказано в словах псалмопевца святаго Пророка Давида «от Господа стопы человеку исправляются» (Пс. 36, 23).

Преисполнена душа моя благодарности Царице Небесной, Заступничество Которой ясно ощущал и ощущаю в жизни своей.
В этот священный день есть хороший обычай ставленнику поминать добрым словом тех, кто дорог ему, кто сыграл значительную роль в его жизни и становлении. Спешу и я последовать сему обычаю. Ибо сердце мое преисполнено любви, почтения и благодарности к этим людям.

Я благодарен своим родителям, которые, воспитывая меня, преподавали мне уроки нравственности не только на словах, но и на примерах своей труженической жизни, нелицемерной любви, смирения и безропотного несения скорбей.

Вспоминая слова апостола Павла «Поминайте наставников ваших» (Евр. 13, 7), хочу высказать слова благодарности и молитвенно вспоминаю своих духовных наставников и учителей. Пример их жертвенного служения Церкви и искренней преданности делу Евангельской проповеди всегда вдохновлял меня в моих трудах. Это ныне уже покойный Архимандрит Наум (Байбородин), насельник Троице-Сергиевой Лавры, руководствуясь наставлениями которого, я совершал первые шаги на поприще своего духовного становления. Из общения с ним я впервые задумался о монашестве и, хотя в тo время я не совсем еще проникся пониманием и стремлением к жизни монашеской, но но уже тогда, в глубине души я почувствовал, что это то, чего моя душа желает и ищет и что Господь ведет меня через Его любовь ко мне, к к моему духовному возрастанию, познанию истины и единению с Ним.

По приезду в Канаду, в Николаевском кафедральном соборе города Монреаля на меня обратил свое архипастырское внимание и избрал своим иподиаконом, а позднее хиротонисал в сан диакона и пресвитера, Высокопреосвященнейший владыка Гавриил, архиепископ Монреальский и Канадский, под чутким aрхипастырским взором и руководством которого я возрастал сначала, как церковнослужитель, а затем и как священнослужитель и в лице которого, всегда имел отеческое попечение.

Благодарю Господа Бога, за то, что в далеком 2009 году направил стопы моя в наш Свято-Троицкий монастырь, в нашу Зарубежную Лавру, где я всегда получал необходимую духовную поддержку, и что именно здесь в нашей Зарубежной Лавре, я был рукоположен в священический сан и епископом Сиракузским Лукой, по благословению архиепископа Гавриила, был пострижен в малую схиму с наречением имени Спиридон в честь святителя Спиридона Тримифунтского. Глубоко признателен преподавателям нашей Троицкой семинарии, которые открывали для меня таинственный и столь утешительный мир богословия и так получилось, что моя хиротония проходит в день праздника великих Вселенских Учителей и Святителей Василия Великого, Григория Богослова и Иоанна Златоустого, которые являются небесными покровителями нашей семинарии. Благодарю нашего Высокопреосвященнейшего митрополитa Николая, и всех архипастырей нашей Церкви, что оказали мне столь высокое доверие и поставили на великое архипастырское служение в Церкви Христовой.

C благодарностью обращаюсь к Святейшему Патриарху Московскому и всея Руси Кириллу и Священному Синоду Русской Православной Церкви за утверждение решения Архиерейского Синода Русской Зарубежной Церкви об избрании меня епископом.

Епископ – пастырь своего стада, его попечитель и проводник в Царство Божие. Слова апостола Петра остаются актуальными и сегодня: «пасите Божие стадо, какое у вас, надзирая за ним не принужденно, но охотно и богоугодно, не для гнусной корысти, но из усердия, и не господствуя над наследием Божиим, но подавая пример стаду» (1 Петр. 5, 2-3). Служение епископа высоко и ответственно, оно требует от человека всецелой отдачи, полного напряжения духовных сил, постоянной устремленности к нравственному совершенству. Епископ должен «хранить таинство веры в чистой совести» (1 Тим. 3, 9): его образ жизни должен соответствовать проповедуемому им учению, и совесть его должна быть чиста от всего, что могло бы воспрепятствовать действию через него благодати Божией. И как это выразил преподобный Исидор Пелусиот: «Епископ должен быть украшен всеми добродетелями, и своими признавать чужие бедствия; не для себя, но для подчиненных живет он, и его жизнь испытуется тысячами глаз и языков».

Благодарю Вас, присутствующих здесь, дорогиx архипастырeй, оставившиx свои многополезные и многообразные труды во славу Христа и Его Святой Церкви, которую Он стяжал своею Честною Кровию, и яко «апостоли от конец, совокупльшиися зде», чтобы принять участие в моей Пятидесятнице. Испрашивая Вашего благословения на предстоящий подвиг, прошу не оставлять меня в Ваших молитвах как будущего наименьшего собрата, решившегося восприять на себе иго архипастырского служения, со смирением принимая высокую честь епископства, на которую я ныне призываюсь Духом Святым чрез избрание Вашего Высокопреосвященства и Собора архиереев. «При словах сих одно содержу в уме и сердце: буди воля Божия!», заключал святитель Феофан Затворник, повторю эти слова и я, недостойный.
Смущается душа моя в сию минуту и высота предстоящего служения поражают мой ум, но меня подвигают к этому слова Господа нашего Иисуса Христа: «Не вы Меня избрали, а Я вас избрал и поставил вас, чтобы вы шли и приносили плод, и чтобы плод ваш пребывал, дабы, чего ни попросите от Отца во имя Мое, Он дал вам» (Ин. 15,16).

Высота епископского служения — это прежде всего высота ответственности перед Богом за пасомых, просвещение их душ светом Евангелия и возрастание в христианских добродетелях. Об этом напоминает святитель Иоанн Златоуст, говоря, что «...получивший епископство, сколько на высшую взошел он степень, столько же строжайший даст и отчет» (свт. Иоанн Златоуст, Беседа на притчу о должнике десятью тысячами талантов, взыскавшем сто динариев (Мф. 18, 23-35)). Внимаю этому и осознаю всю серьезность своего нового служения. Дерзаю верить, что Господь, призвавший меня к новому, высокому и ответственному служению, в ответ на молитву вашу, святители Божии, укрепит и сподобит меня как «делателя непостыдна, право правяща слово истины» (2 Тим. 2,15).

Возношу хвалу в Троице славимому Богу за все милости, ниспосылаемые мне, недостойному, в минувшие годы, все наставления и утешения, которые укрепляют меня в подвиге предстоящего мне служения, при этом хочется сказать с апостолом Павлом: «Вся могу о укрепляющем мя Иисусе Христе» (Флп. 4,13). Всю свою надежду возлагаю на Господа и верую, что благодать хиротонии укрепит мои силы на новом поприще архипастырского служения.

Вас, Ваше Высокопреосвященство, Ваши Высокопреосвященство и Преосвященства, богомудрых архипастырей, прошу и молю: вознесите свои святительские молитвы о мне, да сподобит меня Господь через Таинство хиротонии принять Божественную благодать и силу, которая «в немощи человеческой совершается» (2 Кор. 12, 9), чтобы благодать эта укрепила меня на предстоящий подвиг, чтобы мое дальнейшее служение послужило мне и вверенной моему попечению пастве во спасение души и достижение жизни вечной в Царствии Небесном.
