55 NYC Friends came to a weekend retreat at Powell House last weekend, Sept. 18-20, 2026. All of our meetings were represented except for Staten Island (maybe next year?). We contemplated ministry in all its forms, connected across meetings, and enjoyed being in nature. Many thanks to the Friends — Jess, Luisa, Beth, Daniela, Beverly, Jerry, Trevor, Ted, and Will — who facilitated sessions during the weekend. Read more about the retreat at nycquakers.org/news

Yesterday, NYC Friends joined a walk and vigil with the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 through remembrance, reflection, and a collective call for a more peaceful tomorrow.

The founding mission of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows: transforming grief into actions for peace and justice, rejecting cycles of violence and war. https://www.peacefultomorrows.org/

Many thanks to Brenda K for sharing these photos with us.

Bayard Rustin appears in a video installation, Down the Barrel (of a Lens), currently on view at MOMA's PS1 museum in Long Island City. The two-channel installation by Kameron Neal is composed of snippets selected from over 3,600 minutes of NYPD surveillance footage from between 1960 and 1980, primarily by plainclothes officers. One side of the installation shows protestors and strikers noticing the cameras. The other side shows the footage the (seemingly all white) police officers took when at home or with their colleagues. The protestors who looked directly into the camera lens were reclaiming power by identifying the hidden police officer and letting him know he'd been seen.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Bayard Rustin appear. The video lingered on him for a bit before continuing, allowing me enough time to take this pic.
