THE PURPOSE OF THE CROSS
Destroying the Devil’s Works
“The one who practices sin [separating himself from God, and offending Him by acts of disobedience, indifference, or rebellion] is of the devil [and takes his inner character and moral values from him, not God]; for the devil has sinned and violated God’s law from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”
- 1 John 3:8
I. The Reality We Confront
The Devil’s Destructive Works
Scripture clearly identifies the origin of sin and rebellion, the devil. His “works” are the systems and activities that oppose God’s nature and purposes: deception and lies, accusation and condemnation, bo***ge and fear, sickness and oppression, and every form of evil that fractures God’s creation and alienates humanity from Him. To grasp the depth of Christ’s mission, we must first acknowledge the reality of what He came to dismantle.
Jesus Himself exposed the devil’s agenda:
“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy.”
John 10:10
II. The Victory We Proclaim
Christ’s Authoritative Destruction
Jesus did not come merely to oppose the devil’s works. He came to destroy them. This destruction is decisive, complete, and authoritative. Through His incarnation, sinless life, atoning death, and victorious resurrection, Jesus launched a total assault on Satan’s kingdom, breaking its power and liberating its captives.
By divine revelation, the Apostle Paul declared:
“When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities [those supernatural forces of evil operating against us], He made a public example of them [exhibiting them as captives in His triumphal procession], having triumphed over them through the cross.”
Colossians 2:15
Beloved, 1 John 3:8 is not a spotlight on the devil’s power, but a proclamation of Christ’s superior purpose and finished victory. The cross was the strategic blow that shattered the machinery of hell. Every chain of addiction, every lie about your identity, every stronghold of fear, and every grip of sin qualifies as a “work of the devil” and Jesus appeared to destroy them all.
Our calling, therefore, is not to beg God for a victory already won, but to live from that victory. You are not fighting for triumph; you are fighting from triumph. As you align your faith with Christ’s finished work, you are empowered to enforce the freedom He purchased for you.
Prayer
Father, I thank You for sending Jesus to destroy every work of the devil. Enlighten the eyes of my heart to see and walk in the fullness of His finished victory. Let every form of bo***ge, fear, sickness, sin, and oppression lose its hold in my life. I receive and enforce the liberty purchased by the cross, and I live today in the power of Christ’s triumph. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
I boldly declare: Jesus Christ appeared to destroy the works of the devil. Therefore, every chain is broken, every lie is silenced, and every stronghold is dismantled in my life. I walk today in freedom, authority, and victory through the finished work of the cross. Amen.🙏
