Advent Lutheran Church

Advent Lutheran Church God's love is for EVERYONE. We aim to live like it. You are welcome here! The Advent community reflects the vibrant diversity of New York City.

We draw people of all ages, colors, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities, family makeups, nationalities, income brackets, citizenship statuses, and faith backgrounds together to worship, talk, and serve. We are life-long Lutherans, people from other denominations and faith traditions, spiritual seekers, and skeptics. Our members have many first languages. Currently, we are able to offe

r worship and activities in English and Spanish. We are faithfully figuring out how to be one community of people who speak two different languages. Being an inclusive community goes beyond that. Being one community is about cultivating understanding and inclusion so everyone’s story is part of who we are as God’s church. You are welcome here.

* We are a Reconciling In Christ congregation, supporting the full participation of the Queer community in the life of the church, locally and world-wide.

"In our Gospel reading I think the disciples were in their own crisis of supposed-to-bes. Not able to keep up with reality.

They were supposed to be his team – supposed to stand by their teacher but they couldn’t stay awake one hour, Judas couldn’t resist a 30 pieces of silver gift card, Peter couldn’t manage to even say he knew him and so they were nowhere to be seen when he died and had to rely on the testimony of – of all people – the women.

Jesus wasn’t supposed to die but he did.

And then Jesus was supposed to stay dead, and he didn’t.

So after several days of things not going the way they were supposed to, Jesus stands among them –Holiness in the flesh right before their eyes, and yeah they worshipped him but (and this is my favorite part) but some doubted. (chef’s kiss) Those are my people. The ones who can’t see God right in front of them because they are too wrung out by how whatever is happening is not what they think should be happening. I cannot overstate how much I relate to this."

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

When I was in seminary I had a professor tell me that you can't describe the Trinity without committing heresy. It's too deep a mystery. So you can imagine my delight when my approval essay required for ordination was essentially, describe the Trinity! Apparently, I was just heretical enough to be ordained, so it all worked out.

But that sense of wonder has stuck with me. There are so many holy things we want to understand, but some gifts are simply mystery. Father, Son and Holy Spirit - one God, three persons. We are tempted to shrink God down to something we can understand and control, but the inexplicable mystery of the divine relationship of God refuses to allow us to do so. The very nature of the Trinity speaks to a power and presence that is greater than anything we can conceive. And yet, because we are created in the image of God, a God who exists in continual relationship, that vast Divine Creator has deigned to invite us to experience the core of the Holy when we are in community.

Vast and particular. Cosmic and intimate. Beyond defining and love itself. Meeting us at the table, at the font, in community.

How humbling it is to be a child of God.

See you in our New York City sanctuary or our online sanctuary at 11am (EST) through YouTube Live () as we welcome and live into the gift of being called God's beloved.

Advent is Hiring Event Coordinators!

Event coordinators work in the capacity of the building manager during community events. They act as liaisons between space sharers and Advent Lutheran Church making sure that the space sharer’s have their needs met in regards to their use of the building , but also supervising the space and making sure that it is being treated well. They are the first line of communication with the public and are also expected to maintain the security of the space from the public as well as during emergencies.

Coordinators work on an event by event basis.

A blessing for today:

Good morning, you beautifully unhinged little phenomenon.

Storm through the day like the adrenaline soaked, rule breaking powerhouse you are.

Let your confidence hit like static in the air before lightening strikes.

Be savage, be electric and be impossible to contain.

God bless you.

"We sat in the hallway in a couple of plastic folding chairs. My patient’s mother and teenage brothers were haggard from 48 straight hours spent in the hospital, but they repeatedly declined my offer of coffee or tea. (I’ve changed some details in this story to protect their privacy.) For the last 20 minutes, the mother and I had alternated between a discussion of her hope in a miracle for her ten-year-old daughter and long periods of silence broken by the ping of the elevator and the beeping of monitors. I was just about to ask again if I could get them anything when I saw one of the residents step off the unit and head in our direction. For a moment we locked gazes. I knew exactly what he was going to say. I stood up so he could take my chair.

“I’m so sorry to have to tell you this, but your daughter’s heartbeat is extremely erratic,” the doctor began, looking at my patient’s mother. He explained that soon her heart would stop. “If it’s your wish,” he said, “we will begin chest compressions to see if we can restart her heart. But I want to be very clear with you—the outcome will not be changed. I’m so sorry, but your daughter is going to die no matter what.”

My patient’s mother looked steadily at the doctor as her two sons fidgeted in their seats and stared at their mom. She took a deep breath and rubbed her face with her hands."

The most religious people are also statistically the most likely to place their faith in artificial life support....
