Dear NYJCCJR Members and Friends,

In this season of teshuvah, of grace and return, we are honored and grateful to be in partnership with you in the struggle for a more just and compassionate New York. Over this last year, we have advocated for the safety and dignity of people inside New York state prisons and city jails. We have pushed for reforms to the parole system, advocated for the Clean Slate Act and raised the alarm about the conditions on Rikers Island. We have prayed with our Jewish brothers and sisters on the inside and walked with New Yorkers of every identity as they come home.

We have also sharpened our thinking and Jewish theologies of punishment and liberation. This year, we launched the Justice Beit Midrash, a space for deep Torah learning and communal reflection. We explored gun violence, restorative justice, stigma, re-entry and complicated questions like if you should put a mezuzah on a jail cell. We were joined with guest teachers and speakers who challenged us to connect Jewish teachings and traditions to contemporary issues of Criminal Justice Reform.

We are grateful to you for working with us to enshrine a spirit of teshuvah into New York's criminal legal system. As we look towards a new year, we hope to grow our membership, continue our advocacy and create opportunities to learn and act together.

Our Coalition and its work of educating and activating the Jewish community to reimagine public safety and advocate for criminal justice reform is especially necessary in this fraught political moment of rollbacks and backlash. Thank you for being part of this work.

May all New York communities thrive and flourish in this New Year,

Rabbi Hilly Haber and Matt Nosanchuk
