We will be trying a variation of this in the fall.

Professor Justin McDaniel, the tenured chair of the religious-studies department at the University of Pennsylvania, has found a way to make his students read again. They don’t write papers or take tests; instead, he asks them to follow a strict set of behavioral constraints. They must give up their cell phones and other worldly distractions, including, in one course, s*x.

At a reading group based on his influential class Existential Despair — where students gather one evening each week for seven or eight hours to read an entire novel start to finish in total silence, then discuss it in a darkened classroom — McDaniel welcomed a dozen former students and a couple of his friends to his apartment in Philadelphia. As his guests gathered, McDaniel reminded them of the first expectation for the night. “You cannot introduce yourself by anything about you,” he said. “I don’t want to hear any majors. I don’t want to hear any jobs. I don’t want to hear any impressive things about you at all.”

Getting Jesus from Holy Trinity

When the community Holy Trinity rebuilt it’s parish hall, it was with the belief that our role was to align, support, and enhance the priorities of the community. We could now provide for artists, community groups, and even other faith traditions.

We built a comfortable space with a low carbon footprint. It has the latest heat pumps and HVAC units; we are fully ADA compliant with a reliable elevator; and our sanctuary space is flexible with movable pews. We can celebrate and serve, while providing desperately needed affordable public space.

Since 2021, we’ve provided space for dozens of organizations for free, including for leadership training, public service initiatives, community hearings, and emergency events. We’ve kept our fees low for addiction groups, children’s performances, and other public programs.

The cost of maintaining this building, however, is nearly $10,000 monthly. And we want to remain as affordable as possible. Electricity itself can cost nearly $3500 a month.

We are looking to raise up a group of 200 friends who can donate monthly to help us keep our space as inexpensive as possible. That’s less than any media subscription.

Your steady support creates an economic ripple effect far beyond your small donation. Any amount multiplies. A regular donation of as small as $20 a month means an impact of anywhere from $60 to $150 in the community.

The power of our communities is enhanced when we share our burdens with one another. As we seek to resist the negative powers in the world and amplify the good, our congregation seeks to help all people in our community flourish.

What amount is good for you? Give an amount you can afford to forget about. Give an amount equivalent to a television subscription or a gym membership. We will, of course, welcome sacrificial giving if you are ready to do so.

By doing so, you will enhance this community’s work to provide stability and mutual flourishing in a neighborhood that you love.

Thank you to everyone who donated clothing, toiletries, and other necessities, and to the dozens of volunteers who came on short notice to sort and organize everything with care and dignity.

Today residents were allowed to re-enter their buildings. Here at Holy Trinity, representatives from Legal Services, Catholic Charities, elected officials' offices, and other organizations joined us as residents came to collect donations.

We are now accepting only new, sealed, packaged undergarments, umbrellas, and ponchos — tomorrow, Thursday, 9am to 4pm. Financial donations are also welcome.

We will rest this evening and return refreshed. Remaining donations will be distributed to others in need. On Friday (not Thursday) we will need help to pack the donations for their next home.

We are grateful to be a small part of this deeply caring community and will continue to discern how best to support the residents in the days ahead. Please share this with other organizations and neighbors in Inwood.

We have received an enormous amount of goods that we are now ready to distribute to the families impacted by the fire on 207. We had nearly thirty volunteers from the community help on a moment's notice to sort and organize the gifts.

We do not need any more clothing and food donations at this time until we meet with the families. NY Love Kitchen will be helping with food; we have plenty of clothing.

However, Holy Trinity will place any donations under 207 Dyckman into a fund solely for use to help the families in need. Giving link is in the comments.
