🌍 Food security is a peace and security issue.
Today, the United Nations Security Council convened an open debate on the devastating link between armed conflict and food crises, highlighting how conflict can disrupt food systems, restrict humanitarian access, and leave communities at greater risk of hunger.
Opening the debate, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on the Security Council and international community to uphold their commitments under Security Council Resolution 2417, which recognizes the link between armed conflict and food insecurity.
He called for action in three key areas:
🍽️ 1. Fully implement Resolution 2417
Protect civilian food-related infrastructure and ensure humanitarian personnel have safe, rapid, and unimpeded access to communities in need.
🌾 2. Protect food systems
Safeguard farms, water supplies, food routes, markets, and other critical infrastructure from the impacts of conflict.
🕊️ 3. Protect humanitarian personnel
Ensure humanitarian workers are protected under international humanitarian law so they can safely deliver lifesaving assistance.
As conflicts continue to drive hunger and food insecurity around the world, protecting food systems and humanitarian access is essential to protecting civilians and building lasting peace.
