We're honored to welcome Rebecca O. Johnson, who joins BZC's Sarah DΕjin Emerson for this conversation. Rebecca has been a community organizer since the early 1970s, working on housing, food security, Black worker rights, and immigration alongside women of color across many countries. Since Hurricane Katrina, she has devoted much of her writing, advocacy, and organizing to exposing the environmental toll that plastics production and industrial toxins take on working-class communities and communities of color β harm that too often stays hidden in plain sight.
Her path holds both movement work and spiritual depth: she practices in the Theravada tradition, served on the Graduate Faculty of Sarah Lawrence College's Health Advocacy Program, and founded its End-of-Life Care Program. She has also taught Community Engaged Buddhism at Union Theological Seminary, and in 2024 completed the Urban Naturalist Certificate at the New York Botanical Garden, where she turns a critical eye on the very idea of "invasive" species.
Sarah will guide the conversation, bringing Rebecca's decades of on-the-ground organizing into dialogue with Buddhist eco-chaplaincy β exploring how climate justice, equity, and spiritual care show up together. Q&A and open discussion follow.
