The INK Author Association (Institute of Nur Karkari) recently held its inaugural conference on Sufism in Canada. The gathering brought together an international group of authors, researchers, and artists to foster literary exchange and cross-cultural dialogue.
A key highlight of the event was a formal recognition by Ontario MPP Sheref Sabawy, who presented the association with a provincial Certificate of Appreciation for its cultural contributions. In return, the association's founder, Sheikh Mohamed Faouzi Al Karkari (Quddisa Sirruh), and Executive Director, Dr. Khaled Salem, presented MPP Sabawy with a plaque acknowledging his ongoing support for the arts.
During the program, Sheikh Al Karkari discussed his newly published book, The Secret of the Word, highlighting the social and cultural impact of language and literature.
Furthermore, the Conference featured a diverse roster of speakers representing North America, the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. Notable participants included:
* Dr. Khaled Salem: Physician, practitioner of Sufism, and author of I Loved.
* Amira Al-Masabi: University researcher in transformational leadership.
* Asiya Ahmed: Egyptian-Canadian writer and author of Nefertiti and the Old Woman of the Inca.
* Saba Al-Eryani: Yemeni-Canadian writer and special education specialist.
* Jihan Ashrafi: Writer, poet, and academic in English, French, and Sufi literature.
* Huma Aatifi: Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn College and Lehman College.
* Dr. Amal Bin Sharaf: Algerian-Canadian academic specializing in sociolinguistics.
* Dr. Ahmed Al-Khafaji: Educational psychologist, author, and former deputy minister.
* Omar Murad: Writer and novelist.
* Imad Kayali: Jordanian-Canadian architect and writer.
* Faouzia Ben Moussa & Khawla Taha: Representing the 365 Canada Foundation for Education and International Integration.
* Douha Al-Darweesh: Syrian-Canadian media professional and cultural coordinator.
The program also included an awards segment celebrating key contributors to the literary space, notably honoring Palestinian-Canadian novelist and Nawat Foundation director Basma Al-Takrouri.
The event concluded with a musical performance by Egyptian-Canadian artist Majed Zareef, featuring a tribute to the legacy of Arab singer Hany Shaker.
Following its successful launch at the Conference, the INK Author Association plans to continue hosting events across the region to promote global arts, literature, and education.
