"Ut queant laxis" is a hymn written for today's feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Guido d'Arezzo (b. 991) used it to teach music. The syllables of the song are the names of notes still used in solfege: ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la. Ut became "do" later
