Beloveds,

Prior to moving to NYC for seminary, Asheville, NC was my home for 12 years. There in the small mountain town, about 300 miles inland, I took comfort in my mountain sanctuary, believing that the only thing I had to worry about were wildfires. Never did I imagine a hurricane would submerge the place where I once called home. Yet, amid a devastation that set my community back by 30 years, I witnessed with great awe and pride as folks resiliently came together to establish mutual aid networks.

Like those who do not heed the warnings of prophets, I’ve reflected on my own false security. Indigenous and Pacific Islander communities have warned us for decades—even centuries. What happened in southern Appalachia is no longer a warning from the earth but a symptom of corporate and imperial greed that affects us all. As Christians, we are called to stand in solidarity with creation and challenge oppressive systems. We must also advocate for ourselves at this moment. The folks of Appalachia are demonstrating for us what society can look like when we come together.

How can we better model that as a virtual church?

This Sunday(10/6), we turn to a story beyond our biblical canon. The Maccabees offer us a historical perspective that is often overlooked in our Protestant traditions.

What wisdom can we draw from the Maccabees about resistance and the slippery slope into power and power maintenance?

On Tuesday, despite public outcry, the state of Missouri executed Marcellus Williams, a Black man, for a crime he did not commit. The Supreme Court refused to intervene, even when the prosecutor and the victim’s family pleaded for clemency. As we mourn this injustice, we’ll continue our reflections on “the non-canonical” ones–those taken out of sight into prison cells. Our scriptures, however, reveal that God sees the ones in prison and call us to set prisoners free.

Scripture: Wisdom of Solomon 1:1-3 (The Inclusive Bible)

Leading up to Chuseok/Tsukimi/Mid-Autumn Harvest, we’ve talked about our “non-canonical” ancestors as we also explored the concept of canons. This Sunday, we’ll continue to exploration of the deutero-canonical books—particularly, Wisdom of Solomon.

➡What sort of wisdom can we glean from Wisdom of Solomon 2? How did the ancients perceive justice, and do their perceptions still resonate with us today?

🌕 Chuseok/Tết Trung thu/Tsukimi/Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival days are approaching! 🌟

This Sunday, we will have a two-part service dedicated to celebrating the Mid-Autumn Harvest and talking about disability justice.

In our gathering (on Zoom!), we’ll give thanks to God for the resilience and wisdom of our ancestors. In our reclamation of our heritage and in our celebration of our ancestral traditions and stories, how do our faith and roots inspire and drive us in the struggle for our collective liberation?

➡ Mink Chung, M.Ed., parent advocate of a child with disability, will lead us through thinking and talking about disability justice. How can we, as a Sunday School community and as a church committed to justice, shift our mindset and practices to work towards inclusion of people with disabilities?

Through games and storytelling, we will explore the importance of people with health conditions, impaired mobility, and neurodiversity (and their allies) coming together to share experiences and concerns.

This interactive workshop will give both disabled and non-disabled allies a chance to share struggles and victories, learn about the history of the Disability Justice movement and key concepts of inclusion and ableism, practice preferred language, and give a voice for disabled participants to offer their perspectives and strategies for their successful inclusion.

Please feel free to bring your harvest moon food and drinks to the service for communion!

In most Christian messianic traditions, Jesus is envisioned as a blameless and infallible figure. blameless and can do no wrong. The writers of the Gospels, particularly the Gospel of Mark, show a more nuanced, complex, and human side of Jesus.

➡ How may this portrayal reshape our understanding of our relationship with the divine?
