Today we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
Originally known as Decoration Day, this sacred tradition has deep roots in the African American community. In 1865, formerly enslaved Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina gathered to properly bury and honor Union soldiers who had been neglected after the Civil War. They decorated the graves with flowers, sang hymns, prayed, and marched in remembrance, helping begin what we now know as Memorial Day.
Today, we continue that legacy of remembrance, gratitude, and honor.
As a church family, we thank God for the sacrifices made for freedom, justice, and unity. May we never forget those who laid down their lives, and may we continue to walk in faith, love, and service to others.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13
