Elementary students are beginning an exciting four-week journey exploring the life of David. The first week focuses on how God equips and strengthens David to carry out his tasks, as told in 1 Samuel 16 and 17. This engaging start sets the stage for discovering how faith, courage, and God’s guidance play a vital role in David’s story.

Christian Feminity

One of the phrases I try to mention from the pulpit at least once a month is, “We speak where the Bible speaks.” This phrase was prioritized in the formation of the Christian Church/Church of Christ “Restoration Movement.” We’ve spent the past couple months glancing at aspects of God. It is probably safe to say we sometimes ignore some of God feminine attributes. What a reminder the value God has placed on women that He mentions in scripture some of these qualities that we should appreciate about the women in our lives.

God as a comforting mother: Isaiah 66:13 "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you and you will be comforted over Jerusalem." We live in such a fast moving, little to no physical touch culture. How many of us deeply appreciate the comfort of our loved ones whether in normal or difficult times? God, like a good mother, can be a source of comfort. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that the comfort we receive from God we can also use to give to others. We have so many afflicted people in this world who need God’s comfort.

God depicted as a mother giving birth: Isaiah 42:14 "For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant." Context here is obviously pointing to God’s desire for Israel to turn back to him. Labor pains are utilized in multiple ways throughout scripture.

God depicted as a protective mother: Matthew 23:37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing." Thank goodness we have mothers who put this verse into practice to protect their children sometimes even when the children are not seemingly interested in that protection. It is a sad state of our current culture that we need to tell women they should be prioritizing protecting their children. Not making plans to murder them.

Does this mean Kyle is converting to becoming a full-blown feminist? Of course not, but I do think it is time that we acknowledge that there has been a growing problem in our world that femininity has been hijacked and women are being lied to. The best way to flush out lies in our hearts and mind is to turn towards the truth of God’s word and turn to Jesus Christ who is the author and perfector of our faith and is the way, the truth and the life.

Blessings,
Kyle

Elementary kids will discover that obeying God can be challenging. Last week’s lesson showed how Saul chose to disobey God, which saddened Samuel, as God declared Saul could no longer be king. But God encouraged Samuel, revealing He had already chosen one of Jesse’s sons to be the next king. Even though Samuel feared what Saul might do if he found out, he bravely obeyed God’s command.
