On this day 172 years ago, Pierre Toussaint died after a life dedicated to living his Catholic faith and helping others through his generosity and charitable works. Born a slave in present-day Haiti, he moved as a teenager to Manhattan, where he eventually became a free man, entrepreneur, husband and adoptive father. His candidacy for sainthood is strengthened by his devotion to the church, orphans, refugees, those in poverty and yellow fever victims.
