An individual is considered high-risk for breast cancer when their lifetime risk of developing the disease is determined to exceed 20%. This elevated risk category is determined by various factors, including genetic predisposition, family history, and personal health factors. Understanding your risk status is crucial for early detection and prevention strategies.

Breast cancer screening is not one-size-fits-all because individual risk factors, breast anatomy, and genetic backgrounds vary widely. This means a single schedule or test cannot safely or effectively detect every cancer. Please have a detailed discussion with your healthcare provider, especially if you have concerns about your breast health.

Many people mistakenly believe the BRCA name means “breast cancer” as an illness. In reality, everyone has normal BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that act as tumor suppressors to repair damaged DNA and prevent cancer. It is only when an inherited mutation occurs that the risk of breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers rises significantly.

BRCA gene testing is done if you have a personal or family history of specific cancers or if your physician deems it appropriate based on your medical results.

Men with a new breast or underarm lump must be evaluated because a firm, painless lump near the ni**le or swelling in the armpit can be a sign of male breast cancer. While most male breast lumps are benign: such as gynecomastia (enlarged glandular tissue), fatty lipomas, or cysts; male breast cancer must be formally excluded.

Maintaining a healthy weight after menopause lowers breast cancer risk primarily because excess fat tissue produces extra estrogen and triggers chronic inflammation that can fuel tumor growth.
