We hope you are excited for our Day of the Dead/Fet Gede event! Learn about Gede from Sallie Ann's book Vodou Visions:

Gede is the lwa of both death and sexuality. He lives in the cemetery, at the bottom of the largest cross, or a cross that stands in the central crossroads in a cemetery. He rules the Dead. He is the father of the Dead. Gede usually is pictured as a skeleton dressed in dapper clothing, with black tails and a top hat. He wears gloves, carries a cane, and smokes a cigar or pipe. Gede wears dark sunglasses that have only one lens. Sometimes this is said to symbolize that he sees in two worlds. Sometimes it is said that it more crassly represents the power of his one-eyed phallus. Gede is vulgar, even obscene. He is cocky. He tells off-color jokes, often at the expense of his followers. If he picks on you, you may have to pay him to go away. But Gede always tells the truth and can be counted on when the situation is difficult. He is the patron of young children. In spite of his association with death, Gede is also the Lwa who is most often called upon for healing when there is an illness. Gede is death, but also he is procreation and regeneration. Gede often breaks in uninvited to the ceremonies of the other Lwa. He is gluttonous, hoarding food under a table or behind a wall, where he devours it. Death is always hungry. Gede’s dance is graphically sexual, with grinding hips and pelvis. Sometimes he even humps the drums. He is the great equalizer who laughs at our human egos. Gede’s colors are mauve or purple, black and white.
