And it continues to raise the question… who is paying for it. It is also shining a light on the urgency the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans has to close churches and liquidate assets even when the existence of proper canonical process is lacking.

Currently even while an appeal
Is pending questioning whether a valid decree was issued to close the church or dissolve the juridical person, the archdiocese continues to work to dismantle a century of legacy.

Piece by piece they are liquidating and pulling down the history of our church — without the knowledge of many — and have failed to respond to parishioners appeal. In addition church memebwrs were told all financial decisions would be open and discussed as part of the process. No such thing has been done.

Meanwhile, the nearly $40 million in expenses resulting from the bankruptcy so far are already more than five times higher than initially projected.

Sacred Heart of Jesus be my love!

Today is the feast day of sweet Servant of God Julia Greeley, such a gentle and loving apostle of the Sacred Heart.

Oil on canvas.

Julia Greeley, Denver’s Angel of Charity, was born into slavery,in Missouri, sometime between 1833 and 1848. While she was still a young child, a cruel slavemaster, in the course of beating her mother, caught Julia’s right eye with his whip and destroyed it.

Freed by Missouri’s Emancipation Act in 1865, Julia subsequently earned her keep by serving white families in Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico—though mostly in the Denver area. Whatever she did not need for herself, Julia spent assisting poor families in her neighborhood. When her own resources were not enough, she begged for food, fuel and clothing for the needy. One writer later called her a “one-person St. Vincent de Paul Society.” To avoid embarrassing the people she helped, Julia did most of her charitable work under cover of night through dark alleys.

Julia entered the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver in 1880, and was an outstanding supporter of all that the parish had to offer. The Jesuits who ran the parish considered her the most enthusiastic promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus they had ever seen. Every month she visited on foot every fire station in Denver and delivered literature of the Sacred Heart League to the firemen, Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

A daily communicant, Julia had a rich devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin and continued her prayers while working and moving about. She joined the Secular Franciscan Order in 1901 and was active in it till her death in 1918.

As she lived in a boarding house, Julia’s body was laid out in church, and immediately many hundreds of people began filing pass her coffin to pay their grateful respect. Julia is buried today in Denver’s Cathedral.

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart
from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.
I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.

Amen.

Our Lady Star of the Sea was the subject of this podcast. Take a listen.

Faith vs. finances, a church in New Orleans is desperately trying to get itself off a list of closures and consolidation. There are only a few months left before more than a dozen Catholic churches in the greater New Orleans area will close their doors or be absorbed into another parish. Last year, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans announced the 13 parishes that will be affected. The Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 after more than 500 claims of sexual abuse by Archdiocesan clergy or staff. As it struggles with its own financial situation, the Archdiocese selected 13 parishes which have been diminishing in population to consolidate. Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans is on the list. In this episode, I visit the parish and its members as they try to find ways to keep their individual church alive while trying keep their faith in the broader Catholic church.
