Check out this unique specimen that has 2 ππ on the same plant! I curiously consulted the worldβs expert in clover genetics. He informed me that when two plants each having at least one four-leaf clover are bred in the lab, they often produce offspring having more than one four-leaf clover. This suggests that inheritance plays some role in producing 4-leaf clovers, at least some of the time! Four-leaf clover occurrence is thought to be about 1 in every 5,000-10,000 leaves, and finding more than one on the same plant in nature is even more rare. Luckily, my kids happened upon a field with an unusually high occurrence of four-leaf clovers and found 2 plants with more than one(!). Though super interesting, not much is known about four-leaf clover genetics because funding almost always goes to more economically important research.
Four-leaf clovers are rare variations of the leaves of white clovers, which typically only have leaves with 3 leaflets. Common three-leaflet clovers are called shamrocks. Now you know the difference!
