A Blessing of Our Sunday School Ministry

Today, we were truly blessed to have our Sunday School children share their gifts by singing two beautiful songs during our worship service. We were also honored to celebrate the installation of our Sunday School teachers and staff as they begin another year of serving our children and congregation.

We give thanks to God for these dedicated women who faithfully give their time, talents, and hearts to teaching and nurturing our children in God’s Word. It is a wonderful blessing to see our Sunday School so well attended and to see so many of our church’s children growing in their faith.

A Harvest of Faith, Fellowship & Giving

Each year, St. John’s Lutheran Church of New Minden plants sweet corn and prays for a good harvest.

This sweet corn isn’t grown to sell—it’s grown to give. Our harvest is donated to area food pantries to help provide for those in need in our communities.

A few farmers from our congregation come together to plant the sweet corn when the time is right. Throughout the growing season, other congregation members help make sure the conditions are right so the sweet corn can grow to its fullest potential.

Then, when it’s time to harvest, everyone and anyone is welcome to come out and help!

This year, we were truly blessed to have members of our church family, ranging in age from 1 to 85, come together to help with the harvest. The harvest took place over two days, bringing together people of all ages to work, fellowship, and serve others. What an incredible example of fellowship and community!

And what a harvest it was!

A total of 147 cases of sweet corn were harvested and delivered to 9 different food pantries—8 in Southern Illinois and 1 in the St. Louis area.

While it might be hot, I truly believe we all look forward to getting together during this time of year. It’s an opportunity for fellowship, serving our neighbors, and putting our faith into action.

Most importantly, it’s a way for us to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, by loving and serving those in need.

We are grateful for everyone who helped plant, care for, harvest, transport, and deliver this year’s sweet corn.

What began with a few seeds, some hard work, and a lot of prayer became a harvest that will help families throughout our communities.

Youth group members and friends celebrated the beginning of the school year and the end of summer vacation with some food, fun, and fellowship compliments of the Carson and Pick families. Our devotion centered around being silent and listening and talking to God in the midst of the chaos of this world. Everyone had a blast hanging out with friends. Our next meeting will be September 13, at the T-SJ gym. Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to attend.
