Matthew 18:18 contains a remarkable promise from Jesus. He gives His Church the authority to “bind” and “loose”—that is, to retain sins from those who refuse to repent and to forgive sins for the sake of Christ to those who repent and believe.

Matthew 18:20 is often cited as a comfort when only a few people arrive for worship or a meeting. The comfort is real: our Lord is not absent simply because a gathering is small. But in its immediate context, Jesus is speaking more specifically about His Church’s difficult and holy work of addressing sin, calling one another to repentance, and restoring the fallen.

Have you ever gone to a bookstore and found yourself in the self-help section? There are basically books for every kind of condition where authors attempt to make you a better person. Admittedly, I’ve bought a bunch of these books in the past. Have they made me a better person? No and yes. Mostly no.
