This past weekend we were so blessed to have The Most Rev. Siby Mathew Peedikayil, HGN and Rev. Anish Thomas talk to us about the mission of the Diocese of Aitape in Papua New Guinea. They gave us a glimpse of the lives of the people who live there. The people there live in remote villages, without electricity, running water, or good roads. They have little to no access to churches, priests, or sacraments. Many communities wait months or even years for a priest to celebrate Mass, hear confessions, baptize their children, or to receive the Eucharist. Despite all these challenges, their Catholic faith remains incredibly strong. We heard a very moving story of one community that went 20 years without Mass, yet they kept their Catholic faith alive through prayer, the Holy Rosary, and their devotion to Mary. They also shared how during Holy Week, the people had to celebrate on an open field because they lack a proper church. They stayed and celebrated despite the Easter Vigil consisting of heavy rains and Easter Sunday the sun was emitting intense heat.
We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to attend Mass daily, receive the Eucharist, go to Confession, and celebrate the Sacraments with relative ease. It is easy to take these things for granted.
Today the Diocese of Aitape has many important needs. They have 10 seminarians in formation who need financial support, as well as a great need for a simple parish church where about 500 Catholics can worship. The cost to support a seminarian for one year is only $5,000 and just $65,000 to build a simple parish church. We can help meet these needs by praying for the people of Aitape and their seminarians, supporting the formation of future priests, and making a financial gift toward the construction of a parish church. No gift is too small. Through our prayers, generosity, and compassion, we can become part of their mission!

What a powerful Sunday Mass as our Lord challenges us not to be distracted by the storms in our lives! It also has been so incredible to see all the young families at Sunday Mass with their young children! So much to be grateful for!

Today we celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He was born on October 23, 1491 in Spain. He was the youngest of 13 children. He served as an officer in the Spanish army. During the Battle of Pamplona his leg was severely injured and he was bedridden for a year. While recovering, he read "The Lives of the Saints" and decided to devote his life to Catholicism. He is the founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). St. Ignatius died on July 31, 1556. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. He is the patron saint of soldiers, educators, and education. St. Ignatius is known for his Spiritual Exercises, a collection of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices to help guide others in their relationship with God. St. Ignatius wanted others to find God in all things! St. Ignatius, Pray for Us. Amen.
