Ellen Simmons for NL Record
The Terry Wilson Memorial Deck at the New London Reservoir is not only finished, but it has a brand-new sidewalk leading right up to the entrance and a parking lot handy for visitors.
The sidewalk was finished before the holidays, thanks to the generosity of businessmen Stuart Cooke and Bob Wilson and his employees.
Work on the parking lot continued through the fall using fill the village had no use for and was recently completed, according to Village Administrator Shawn Pickworth, who credited Cooke for his help with the lot, as well as the sidewalk. He said the lot will settle over the winter and receive a layer of fine gravel in the spring, after which it will continue to settle for around a year and then will be paved.
The idea for the deck was conceived a year and a half ago by members of the Community Improvement Corporation, who wanted to honor Terry Wilson, long-time editor of the New London Record. He passed away in April of 2014.
The Rotary Club joined the effort and members of both organizations have raised almost $35,000 since that time with fundraisers and donations. Another $35,000 is needed to pay off the project.
The current fundraiser is the “Adopt-A-Square Foot” campaign where a donation of $25 makes the donor an “owner” of a square foot of the deck. The names of all those “adopters” will be recognized on a plaque next to the deck. Currently, almost $1,500 has been raised through this effort.
To join this campaign, send name, address and check made out to “Adopt-a-Square-Foot” to New London Rotary, PO Box 43, New London OH 44851. For more information call 419-929-2503. The dedication for the deck is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 22.
