The countdown is officially on, and preparations for the 71st Annual Saint Sophia Greek Festival are in full swing! There is a lot to do between now and Festival time, and we need YOUR help! 💙

Whether you’ve volunteered with us for years or this will be your first time, there’s a job for everyone, no experience necessary!

As we begin another school year, our Saint Sophia Philoptochos was pleased to honor one of our college students, Maria Hathaway, as the recipient of this year’s Philoptochos Scholarship!

Maria has been an active member of our Saint Sophia community and a dedicated participant in our Metropolis camps and programs throughout the years. As she begins this exciting new chapter, Maria has chosen to pursue a path in education, carrying with her the faith, friendships, and experiences she has gained along the way.

We are so proud to celebrate this milestone with Maria and her family and wish her every success as she begins her college journey.

May God guide her steps, strengthen her faith, and bless her studies as she prepares for a future dedicated to educating and inspiring others.

☦️ Blessing of the New School Year! 🎒📚✏️

Today at Saint Sophia, we offered an Agiasmo service to bless the new school year, praying for all of our students, teachers, school staff, and everyone beginning another year of learning and growth. Our students also brought their backpacks forward to be blessed as they prepare for the year ahead.

Following Divine Liturgy, our Young Adults (YAL) hosted a beautiful fellowship hour to help us kick off the new school year together. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make it such a wonderful morning of faith, fellowship, and community!

📚 Sunday School registration is now underway!

If you didn’t have an opportunity to register your children during fellowship hour today, there is still plenty of time. You can register online by visiting the Saint Sophia website or see the teachers during fellowship hour next week.

🗓️ Sunday School begins Sunday, September 13!

We look forward to welcoming our students back to the classroom and beginning another wonderful year of growing together in our Orthodox faith.

May God bless all of our students, educators, and families with a safe, healthy, and successful school year!

Today, August 27, we celebrate the Feast of St. Phanourios, the beloved saint we often turn to in prayer when something or someone is lost, asking for his intercessions that what we seek may be revealed.

In honor of St. Phanourios, members of our Saint Sophia community lovingly prepared Phanouropites, the traditional cakes baked in his honor and offered with prayer. Following Divine Liturgy, we gathered together in the fellowship hall, where the blessed Phanouropites were shared and enjoyed by all.

What a beautiful way to celebrate this special feast day together as a parish family through prayer, tradition, fellowship, and the sharing of food.

May his prayers guide us, strengthen our faith, and help us find what we are seeking - both in this life and in our hearts.

Our Philoptochos Society extends a heartfelt thank you to our entire Saint Sophia community for your generous support of this year’s Back-to-School Supply Drive! 🎒✏️📚

Thanks to your donations, we collected a wonderful assortment of backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers, glue, and other classroom essentials to help local students begin the new school year prepared and ready to learn.

This year’s donations were delivered to the Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London, where they will directly benefit students in our local community.

We are so grateful to everyone who contributed. Your generosity is a beautiful example of Philoptochos in action; coming together in service, compassion, and love for our neighbors. ❤️

Join us at Saint Sophia on Thursday, August 27th as we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Phanourios with Orthros and Divine Liturgy.

A beautiful tradition associated with this feast is the baking of Phanouropita, a special cake offered in honor of Saint Phanourios. We invite you to bake a Phanouropita and bring it to church to be blessed. Following services, the cakes will be shared together during Fellowship Hour.

Never made a Phanouropita before? We’ve included a traditional recipe right on the flyer so everyone can take part in this special tradition!

Come worship with us, learn more about this beloved Orthodox tradition, and share in fellowship with our Saint Sophia family.
