"The peace and plenteousness of life in the heart after communion is the greatest, the most inestimable gift of our Lord Jesus Christ, surpassing all the gifts relating to the body which are received at the same time."
St. John, Wonderworker of Kronstadt

THE YUGSKAYA ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD

The wonderworking Yugskaya Icon of the Mother of God appeared in the early 17th century to a elderly schema-monk of the Pskov-Caves Monastery, the Venerable Dorotheus. The Mother of God commanded him to take Her icon from a place She indicated, carry it to the Yaroslavl region, and there found a monastery.

Elder Dorotheus fulfilled the command of the Theotokos, settling in a small hut in the forest along the Yug River. Pilgrims soon began to gather, drawn by the wonderworking icon from which healings flowed. First came the devout, and then those seeking the monastic life. In this way, the foundation of the monastery was laid. In 1654, through the intercession of the Mother of God, a plague in the region came to an end.

After the Bolshevik revolution, the monastery was closed, and the wonderworking icon was kept in the home of a clergyman. In 2003, it was entrusted to Bishop Joseph. Today, the miraculous image resides in Birobidzhan, in the Church of the Annunciation of the Mother of God.

The Church venerates this icon of the Most Holy Theotokos on June 16 (3).

Cast me not away from Thy presence,! and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
