Lessons from Mediocre Coffee

There was a time in my life when I was not picky about my coffee. Apparently—for better or worse—that time has passed. I know this because I just made myself a cup of Folgers, and it just is not doing it for me. Have I become a coffee snob? Good grief I hope not! I am not one of those people who is into all the fancy Frappuccinos or the latest lattes, and I am not quivering with anticipation for the return of pumpkin coffee this fall. I like my coffee black. Black, bold, and cold is how I usually roll. My favorite coffee is the Cold Brew Nitro we have up at the 7-20-4 Lounge at Twins Smoke Shop. It’s rich, smooth, and bold, has just a touch of natural sweetness, and no bitterness at all. It is amazing!

I suspect this has something to do with my change of taste. In my devotional several months ago titled Lessons from Coffee, I shared how my changing tastes in how I like to take my coffee served to illustrate how we grow in our walk with Jesus. What I was thinking about whilst sipping my mediocre brew this morning, was how my picky pallet is parallel to my experience with my tastes for “spiritual drink.”

The books, devotionals, and study material I prefer these days are ones that are rich and deep, ones that share what the author or speaker has been learning from Jesus as the truths of Scripture are ground in the grind of life. Books like Let Go by Francois Fenelon, Religious Affections by Jonathan Edwards, The Five Stones by Foye Belyea, The Prodigal God by Tim Keller, My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, and Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon to name a few. Books that are free of the bitterness of legalism and from the artificial sweeteners of cheap grace, ones that bring the savor and aroma of the Father, the boldness of the Son, and the brightness of the Spirit. So much of what is out there today is not that. So much of what is popular and readily available is more hype than help, more fad than fact, and more packaged than practical.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not out to dump on the light roast, skim milk, super sweet stuff that is out there. All I am saying is that if that is all we eat and drink, we are going to have a heck of a time staying spiritually awake and alert. Hence the Apostle’s admonition in Hebrews 5:12-13 (NIV).

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.

LESSONS FROM CHICKENS

Once upon a time, we had chickens. We got into raising chickens because the school Maggie and Anna were attending at the time had eggs in an incubator, and once they hatched, they needed a home. Chickens are omnivores; they eat anything. They eat bugs, including ticks. You could feed them table scraps and let them pick through your yard, and you would lose the ticks, cut down on trash, and get eggs in return. It seemed like a good deal.

The girls loved the chickens. They held them, chased them, fed them, watched them grow, and collected the eggs. We found that chickens came in an astonishing array of colors, sizes, and types, and that different kinds of chickens laid different colored eggs. And I can tell you in no uncertain terms that there is a huge difference in the taste of fresh eggs versus the ones you get at the store. They are amazing.

But there was, we found, a dark side to raising chickens. A side of reality that is often not talked about much when people are talking about the joys of raising chickens. They were messy. They could make a lot of noise. Sometimes they would run away or wriggle under the fence into the neighbor’s yard—and that was not welcome. Because of the food and scraps we fed them were also a draw for rats. They also attract natural predators like foxes and hawks. We lost chickens to both.

In the end, between the mess, the predators, and the fact that some neighbors were crying “fowl,” we decided that it was best to give up raising chickens.

The intentional life-on-life discipleship that we are called to in the Great Commission is full of joys, blessings, and surprises that put a smile on your face. There is nothing like seeing a person be born into the Kingdom of God. And it is humbling and joyous to watch people grow and mature in their faith and to see Christ formed in them and to know that God used you in that process.

But kind of like raising chickens, there is a messy side to discipleship too. A side of reality that is often not talked about much when people are talking about the joys of being spiritual parents. Spiritual sons and daughters can be messy, too. Sometimes they make a lot of noise, run away, or get themselves into trouble.

Like raising chickens unintentionally brought the problem of rats, life also complicates discipleship. When we are discipling people there come times when life springs some nasty surprises that you or the people you are discipling were not expecting, which can get us off track, off focus, or leave us really confused about what is going on.

An example is in Matthew 14 when Peter steps out of the boat and starts walking on the water to Jesus. Jesus called him to and he obeyed, and he started to make his way on the waves to Jesus, but then his attention got pulled away to the wind and the waves, and he began to sink.

And as chickens naturally draw their natural predators, discipleship has its natural, or rather, supernatural predators. 1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

While we have the option to decide whether or not to raise chickens, as followers of Christ we do not have the option to stop making disciples of those who want to follow Jesus.

Lessons from Mandi's Garden

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV).

My wife Mandi, has a green thumb. A big green thumb if I am honest. And it will not be denied! She often talks about the garden as being her "happy place." For Mother's Day last year, what she asked for was a pair of climbing rose bushes. I went with her to her favorite greenhouse to pick them out. She picked a pair of rose bushes that would have fragrant yellow roses. As we were getting them, the gardener explained what she would need in addition to the plants in order to ensure that they would grow and thrive. One of the non-negotiables was a certain amount of manure. (Who knew?) Another thing was to make sure that any leaves that fell off were picked up. Honestly, I don't remember why. There were other directions too. All of which, Mandi remembered and happily and fastidiously followed.

Now, I know what you are thinking. "What is the point?" The point is that roses do not just grow because you have a rose bush or just because you want them to. They need a certain environment. They need certain nutrients. They take intentional care to grow. The same is true with the fruits of the Spirit in our lives.

I don't know about you, but I have been learning that "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" do not just bloom in my life just because I am a Christian. While it is true that "Against such things there is no law," it is also true that if I am not intentionally working alongside the Spirit, and following the instructions of The Gardener to cultivate the environment in my mind and heart in which those fruits can grow and mature, I cannot expect much success in producing them. I need to be about removing and weeding out the habits, attitudes, and thoughts that run counter to love if I want to be more loving. I need to understand that just like roses need some good manure to grow those sweet-smelling roses, the fragrant fruits of the spirit often require their own special brand of manure to grow. After all, you cannot show forbearance (aka patience) unless there is something to forbear. Kindness and gentleness are at their most colorful when it would be easier to be angry. Faithfulness is brightest when the temptation not to be is right there beside it. That is probably why every time I pray for patience, what I get are problems!

Where is God working in you right now? What fruit or fruits do you see God working at in you today? Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty with Him. He knows what He is doing. Listen to Him, and join Him in what He is doing. You'll be glad you did.
