Why Pray and Prepare for Worship?
Worship does not begin when the service starts; it begins in the heart before we ever arrive. Preparing for worship positions us to receive all that God desires to do in and through us.
1. Read the Sermon Scripture
Reading the sermon text beforehand helps prepare your mind and heart for Godโs Word. When you familiarize yourself with the passage, you come expecting God to speak. The Holy Spirit often begins teaching and revealing truth before the sermon is even preached. Like the Bereans who searched the Scriptures daily, we should approach worship ready to hear and apply Godโs Word.
2. Listen to the Songs
The songs selected for worship are not random; they are prayerfully chosen to support the theme and focus of the service. Listening to them during the week allows the lyrics to settle into your spirit and helps cultivate an attitude of praise. When you arrive already familiar with the songs, you can engage more fully in worship rather than simply learning the music.
3. Prepare Your Offering
Giving is an act of worship. Preparing your tithe and offering before Sunday helps us give intentionally rather than impulsively. Scripture teaches us to honor God with our resources and to give cheerfully and purposefully. When we plan our giving in advance, we acknowledge that everything we have belongs to God and that worship includes stewardship.
When we pray, read the Scripture, listen to the worship songs, and prepare our offering, we arrive with expectation rather than observation. We move from being spectators to participants. Our heads are ready to receive Godโs truth, our hearts are ready to encounter Godโs presence, and our hands are ready to serve and give.
Come prepared. Come prayerful. Come expectant. God often does His greatest work in hearts that have already made room for Him.
