If the Bible is true, why are there so many different denominations?
I flew recently for the first time in years and was reminded about how different the world looks when you are thousands of feet up in the air. The things that seemed so big while I was on the ground became small, insignificant features upon a growing horizon as we rose into the skies. From the plane window, cars transformed into insects crawling upon the land. The great buildings around them turned into little ant hills, which soon became hard to distinguish from each other as our plane reached higher altitudes. Here amidst the clouds, I saw the country my shoes had literally walked upon that morning. Nothing about it had changed, and yet everything about it seemed to change, all because of my new perspective.
Perspective is a powerful thing! As I flew, I saw the planet I have called home my entire life from a new angle. It humbled and inspired me, and left me changed. But we don’t have to leave the ground to feel this kind of impact. As we go through life, we constantly encounter the power of perspectives. With a new outlook, a person gains or loses the will to go on. New vantage points birth new ideas every day. And the glass is half full or half empty, depending upon your perspective.
But what happens when, as Jesus followers, we realize that so many people who call themselves Christians hold different perspectives from us? How do we talk to a lost world about the truth of the Bible if there are so many different viewpoints amongst believers? Questions like these are legitimate as we swim in a seemingly endless sea of perspectives within the church community. Topics like the age of the earth, baptism, end times, spiritual gifts, worship music, etc., have divided and unified so many nuanced perspectives of the Christian faith for thousands of years now. That's why this week we are going to look at the reasons for the different denominations, how we should approach understanding our differences, and how God desires us to live in light of our diverse viewpoints.
I hope you’ll join us this Sunday at 10am!
