The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross provides an opportunity to reflect on the fact that Jesus, who was fully God, emptied himself and took on flesh to save us – lost and broken sinners. He transformed the cross from a symbol of death to a symbol of hope and restored us to right-relationship with our heavenly Father.

Today’s readings challenge us as Christians to live in God’s love. They make it clear that we cannot seek pardon for ourselves yet refuse mercy to others. Using two very different images, the thornbush and the construction of a house, Jesus reminds us that for our lives to be fruitful and secure we have to build them on his Gospel message. By listening to and following the word of God, we will produce the good fruit of the kingdom and build a life on a strong foundation, capable of withstanding the struggles and challenges of this life.

As we grow closer to the Lord through prayer, frequenting the sacraments, and seeking his will in all things, we can also be better evangelists. As we detach from sin, we are better equipped by the Holy Spirit to accompany others on their own faith journey. When we are no longer blind, we can help lead others to Christ – so we may finish the race together.⁣

God’s love knows no bounds – he loves all people, whether or not they love him. In loving us, he wills our good and bestows his mercy on us unendingly. Jesus calls us to love as the Father does – to love everyone, even those who hate us, which can be very challenging. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, let us strive to be merciful and loving.⁣

The eternal kingdom of God is at hand, and we are invited to prepare our hearts accordingly. The readings today remind us to live with the goal of heaven at the forefront of our minds, cultivating an attitude of worldly detachment that allows us to build our lives around the Lord, that he may one day call us blessed. (1 Corinthians 7:25-31 and Luke 6:20-26)

Today’s feast (The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a reminder that God has had a plan for our salvation and has been intentional throughout history in how things unfold. He had a plan for Mary to bear his Son and so preserved her from sin from before her birth. Let us take comfort that God has a plan for each of us. May we follow our vocation through this world and into the next.⁣

Jesus knew the religious authorities were watching him closely on the sabbath to see if he would cure someone. So when he asks, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it? Jesus is teaching that compassion, love, and mercy are what is most pleasing to God on his sacred day. Let us strive to emulate Jesus, whose actions are always done out of love. ⁣
