This week’s pair of senior sermons — delivered by Freddie Swindal-Endres (M.Div. ‘26) and Stephanie Roston (M.A.R. ’26) — reminded us of the unpredictability of miracles and the importance of gathering in community. Mark Miller and the Marquand Gospel and Inspirational Choir (MaGIC) led music for Tuesday’s service, while Stephanie and Andrew Barnes Jamieson collaborated in an artistic reflection that merged music and dance, inviting the whole congregation to get on their feet!

Today we journey with Jesus into the season of Lent — a 40-day period of repentance, fasting, and prayer.

Our time in chapel this morning culminated in the imposition of ashes. These ashes serve as a sign of human mortality and penitence and as a reminder that only by God’s grace in Jesus Christ are we given eternal life. They were imposed with the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

“God no longer awaits a beholder because we are ready to see!” Today in Marquand, Fr. Kevin O’Brien, SJ invited us to behold our neighbors as God beholds them, remembering that, as Hopkins says, “the world is charged with the grandeur of God.”

The Marquand Chapel team invites you to this year’s Advent Service, titled “Wake Up and Get Ready.”

In the most recent edition of “Marquand Notes,” student Augie Segger shared: “[This year’s service] will be celebrated in four parts: Expectation, Preparation, Incarnation, and Celebration. In addition to proclaiming familiar Advent themes and stories, these four parts will also be tied closely with the four seasons and the four elements: fall and fire with Expectation, winter and air with Preparation, spring and earth with Incarnation, summer and water with Celebration. As we await the birth of the Savior, may our creation-rooted worship draw us closer to the Incarnate Christ already journeying with us.”

We hope to see you in Marquand tomorrow night at 7:00 pm!

This week Marquand Chapel joins the Global Church, waiting in hopeful expectation for the inbreaking of God’s kingdom.

As Marquand gets ready for our annual Advent service and soirée, we’re sharing a message from our Dean of Chapel, Dean Andemicael, who discussed the theme which has animated our worship this semester: Journeying with Jesus.

A few weeks ago, we prayerfully explored the question “What is sacred?” when Marquand Chapel ministers collaborated with Professor Darr’s Religion and Ecology Seminar to offer a service featuring musical and spoken reflections on our physical environment. The seminar encourages students to think across disciplines as they consider issues of faith and ecology.

Throwback Thursday to when Marquand Chapel joined with Christians around the world to mark the 1700 anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea. It was a day to reflect on themes of Christianity unity and faith, while asking critical questions.
