First Presbyterian Church is a worshiping community of progressive Christian believers in the greater New Haven region. We are a broadly diverse and welcoming congregation, and include people from the city of New Haven and all of the surrounding towns, as well as many from the university communities. We gather on Sunday morning to worship God, and throughout the week to be about the work of God in

the world. We are a part of the Reformed tradition, which means that we value the Word of God in Scripture, and as we understand it in the midst of today’s world. In the Word of God read and proclaimed, in music which stirs the souls, in the nurture of children and adults alike, we seek to serve God together. First Presbyterian Church is a congregation long committed to mission and outreach. We are involved in a broad range of activities of compassion and social justice, seeking to rebuild creation. In our midst you will find a range of theological perspectives, all falling broadly within the Reformed tradition of Biblical integrity and social justice. We are committed to issues of inclusiveness, and warmly welcome the full range of family models into our church family.

On Sunday, June 7th we hope you can stay after church for our picnic potluck! ALL ARE WELCOME.

Bring whatever summery food you'd like to bring: big salad with those first summer radishes from your garden, a slow-cooker full of pulled pork, pbj sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, roasted vegetables, pesto pasta, potato salad, veggies and dip, brownies, a pack of M&M cookies, strawberries with whipped cream, or truly, whatever you'd like to bring to share.

Weather permitting, we'll have places to sit outside as well as in the Miller gathering hall.

Given the current dramatic interplay between faith and public life, the Study group has chosen to read White Poverty: How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy. It is written by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, a leading advocate for the rights of the poor and “the closest person we have to Rev Dr. King” (Cornel West).

We had a beautiful service last week with a delicious Easter breakfast potluck, celebratory music during worship, and our annual Easter Egg hunt around the church gardens and playground!🪺 🌷 What was your favorite part of Easter worship this year?

We’ve had a busy Lenten Season here at First Pres! YA gatherings, bread-making, and our “Lent & Liberation” Sessions where we’ve learned together about some of the great liberation theologians from Delores Williams to James Cone. ❤️‍🔥🌀✊

Liberation theology emerged from Latin America in the 60’s, articulating God’s position standing among the poor and marginalized. How have you felt God’s call this season to stand amongst the most vulnerable?

Last week, over 200 folx gathered in our sanctuary to connect, organize, and learn about how we plan to keep our communities safe here in Connecticut.
