Give us all a heart to trust O Lord! 🙏🏼

“Do you want the good news or the bad news first?” When someone asks us this, we pray the good news will at least counterbalance the bad. Life being what it is, however, we know that is not always the case.

Sometimes, in fact, bad news travels solo. Even years later, we can still feel the razor-sharp words plunge into our soul as we heard, “We can’t find a heartbeat” or “I don’t love you anymore.” In A Grief Observed, C. S. Lewis remarked, “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.”

A bad news world, swamped in pain, is like that. Fear wears many masks, and it often introduces itself in the form of bad news.

This fact makes a verse in Psalm 112 all the more remarkable.

As the poet describes the righteous man, who delights in God’s commandments, is well-off, gracious, merciful, and whose righteousness endures forever, he includes this most memorable attribute: “He is not afraid of bad news” (112:7).

I have met believers who delight in the commandments, who are merciful, who give charitably. Perfectly? No, but that is the overall picture of their lives. But one who is unafraid of bad news? That is shocking.

And what is the secret of this fearless person? “His heart is firm [or ‘steadfast’], trusting in the LORD.”

Give us all a heart like that, O LORD. Not a stiff upper lip but a heart that knows, come what may, you are not against us. You are for us. Graft our hearts into the heart of Jesus, who was not afraid of bad news because his heart was, and is, firm, trusting in his Father.

In him and through him, we can face our own bad news, whatever it might be. We know that Jesus our Savior is with us, for us, in us. And he will one day swallow up the worst of news when he raises us from the dead and places us in the new creation, where we will live forever in the joy of his presence.

Over the past week, people across the Midwest U.S. have been impacted by historic levels of flash flooding and severe storms. At least seven people have died, and thousands of residents have been affected by devastating home and infrastructure damage.

UMCOR is responding to the needs of these individuals and families through solidarity grants to the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church and the Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church - INUMC, which will amplify their relief efforts as they distribute supplies and support local churches that are preparing and distributing food and helping residents with flood clean-up.

Our world is in turmoil. Our neighbors near and far are experiencing natural disasters. Please keep them all in your prayers, we’re all in this together!! 🌏🙏🏼🙏🏽🙏🏾🙏🏿🙏🏼❤️

Please join us in prayer for the people of Colombia who were impacted by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake this morning, the strongest to strike the country in the last decade. At least 281 people have died, and thousands more are injured, missing, or have been displaced from their homes. As first responders and search and rescue teams uncover the devastating toll of this disaster, we pray for them and their efforts, and we mourn with those who have lost loved ones.

UMCOR stands ready to respond through support to our humanitarian and ecumenical partners in Colombia and across Latin America. We will share response updates on social media as they become available.
