Dear Friends,
“I want what I want when I want it!” “Look out for number one.” “Treat yourself.” These phrases and ideas have been popular in American culture for years, if not decades. All of them are based on the idea that nothing is more important than taking care of ourselves. To be sure, it is important to maintain healthy personal habits, such as getting proper rest, eating a good diet, and exercising as much as possible. But we can get out of balance. Yet, if we follow our Lord’s teaching, we can get the balance just right. Jesus said that to follow him, one needs to “deny themselves, take up their cross and follow me.” He warned of the danger of becoming too focused on this world, its pleasures, experiences, and values. This Sunday at 9:30 am at Bakerville Church, we will spend time reflecting on these teachings of Jesus, which, if followed, will produce the kind of life most people are looking for. Will I see you in church this week? Will you be watching online? I hope, one way or the other, you will be among those blessed to participate in the Bakerville Church worship experience!

Pastor John Marshall

Dear Friends,
Do you know the name Godtfred Kirk Christiansen? If you’re like me, probably not. Godtfred developed plastic self-locking building blocks, or automatic binding bricks, a new children’s toy in 1955. He called the idea Lego: a way for a child to build anything they could imagine, then take it apart and do it all over again. It is based on simple interlocking plastic bricks or blocks that millions of children and adults have used to create anything from simple houses to intricate spaceships and action figures.

All this, of course, reminds me of what Jesus said about his people. The building blocks of His church are men and women who claim him as their Lord and Savior. Our Lord, the head of the church, uses people like us who spend their lifetimes “binding and loosing,” or creating and taking apart, to build his kingdom here on earth. This Sunday at Bakerville Church, we are going to explore more about what it means to be building blocks for Christ. We will be seeking what the Lord might be able to build using people like us who boldly live out the truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

Won’t you join us this Sunday at 9:30 am? Do consider inviting someone who hasn’t attended recently or ever to join you!

In service to Jesus, our Lord and Savior
Pastor John Marshall

Dear Friends,
How do you know when you have finished eating a piece of delicious cake? For me, it can be hard to tell at times. If there is an abundance of frosting or icing, I typically leave some on the side of my plate. My slice of cake is finally gone after I use my fork to press into a pile of crumbs to collect the very last bite! I learned this technique as a child and have benefited ever since. Crumbs are tasty; they have value. (Ask our dog, who is always sniffing around in search of them!) This Sunday at 9:30 am at Bakerville Church, we will hear the story of a woman the Lord used to teach us a powerful lesson about crumbs and faith. If you have ever prayed and felt God’s answer was slow in coming, this Sunday is for you. If you need a reminder that God’s mercy extends to all people, this Sunday’s service is for you as well. Come worship the Lord at Bakerville Church and be blessed! Invite a friend; they will be blessed too! As always, our service will be available online.

Trusting in Christ,
Pastor John Marshall

Dear Friends,
What do you do when you’re overwhelmed? It could be a problem. For example, I remember, as a child, being so stressed by how messy my room was that I didn’t know where to start. There were too many things out of place: baseball or hockey cards, dirty clothes, Hot Wheels cars and tracks, unnecessary papers from school, and who knows what else. I remember my Dad, seeing how stressed I was, gave me some advice: pick one item to focus on and clean it up; for example, put all the trash in a bag. After I accomplished that, he would give me the next thing I could do. Soon the whole room was cleaned up and ready for vacuuming! When the disciples were overwhelmed by a large crowd of hungry people, they turned to Jesus for help. This week, we will see how our Lord addressed such an overwhelming need and fed well over 5000 people. If you or someone you know is overwhelmed, come to worship this Sunday at 9:30 am at Bakerville Church. Together, let’s turn to the One who is truly present and willing to help when we need him most.
In service to the Lord who is “able to do more than all we ask or imagine,”

Dear Friends,
Waiting is difficult for most people. Whether we are anticipating something wonderful, like a new baby, or dreading the loss of a terminally ill loved one, waiting is hard. I remember years ago watching a Mr. Rogers Neighborhood television program with our children and learning a wonderful song about waiting. “I think it's very, very, very hard to wait. Especially when you're waiting for something very nice…” Fred Rogers wrote a second song, “Let’s think of something to do while we’re waiting.” As followers of Jesus Christ, we are waiting for his glorious, even imminent return. Our Lord and his apostles described his return as sudden, like a “thief in the night.” While we wait, Jesus calls us to continue living out his teachings daily, trusting him, loving one another, and praying. This Sunday at Bakerville at 9:30 am, we will reflect on our Lord’s promise, “I am coming soon!” We will worship the one who holds the future, so we can live with hope! I hope you can come to church in person on Sunday, but if not, you can watch our service online!

Expectantly in Christ,
Pastor John Marshall
