Luke 9:28b-36 describes the Transfiguration of Jesus, a moment where He reveals His divine glory to three of His closest disciples—Peter, James, and John. Jesus takes them up a mountain to pray, a setting often associated with profound encounters with God in Scripture. As He prays, His appearance changes, and His clothes become dazzling white, symbolizing His divine nature and foreshadowing His resurrection. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appear, representing the Law and the Prophets, and they speak with Jesus about His upcoming "exodus," referring to His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.

The disciples, who had been sleeping, wake up to witness this extraordinary vision. Overcome with awe, Peter suggests building three tents to preserve the moment, not fully grasping its significance. Then, a cloud—a sign of God’s presence—overshadows them, and they hear God’s voice declaring, "This is my chosen Son; listen to Him!" This proclamation affirms Jesus as the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets and reinforces the importance of following Him. After the vision ends, the disciples are left with Jesus alone and remain silent, struggling to comprehend what they have witnessed.

This passage highlights several key parts. The Transfiguration reveals Jesus' divine identity and His role as the fulfillment of God’s plan for salvation. It also serves as a moment of preparation for the disciples, strengthening their faith before Jesus' upcoming suffering. Additionally, God's command to "listen to Him" emphasizes the necessity of trusting and following Christ wholeheartedly. The event reassures the disciples—and all believers—that Jesus' path to the Cross leads to glory, not just suffering.

Catholic Lent is traditionally a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter, commemorating Jesus' 40 days of fasting in the desert (Luke 4:1-13). It is a time of spiritual renewal, repentance, and deepening one’s relationship with God.
But how about it being seen as a spiritual practice of "dying" to oneself in preparation for new life in Christ. It mirrors Jesus' journey to the Cross, where He sacrificed everything for humanity. When Catholics give up earthly things during Lent, they are practicing detachment from the world and learning to embrace a deeper reliance on God. Some things to think about this Lent:
- Lent is a time of repentance, where we recognize our sins and seek conversion of heart.
- Just as Jesus endured suffering and death for our salvation, we strive to die to sinful habits and grow in holiness.
- Fasting and giving up comforts (like food, entertainment, or luxuries) train us to let go of temporary pleasures and focus on eternal life.
- This reflects Jesus' teaching: “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25).
- Lent invites us to surrender our desires, pride, and selfishness, just as Jesus surrendered to the Father’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- Acts of self-denial and charity teach humility and love, helping us become more like Christ.

Just as Jesus died and rose again, Lent prepares us to rise to new life at Easter. The sacrifices we make are not just about suffering but about purification and transformation—leading us to greater freedom in God’s love.

Luke 4:1-13 recounts the temptation of Jesus in the desert, a significant moment at the beginning of His public ministry
After Jesus' baptism, He is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasts for 40 days. During this time, the devil tempts Him three times, but Jesus resists, using Scripture to refute each temptation. Jesus both Total Man and Total Devine becomes hungry, the devil tempts Jesus to turn stones into bread, challenging Him to use His divine power for personal gain. Jesus responds: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (Deuteronomy 8:3) This sighting of scripture shows that spiritual nourishment is more important than physical needs. The devil takes Jesus to a high place, offering all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus worships him. Jesus replies: “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.” (Deuteronomy 6:13) Jesus refuses to compromise His mission for worldly power. The devil brings Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem and dares Him to jump, quoting Psalm 91:11-12, saying God will protect Him. However, Jesus rebukes him: “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” (Deuteronomy 6:16) Jesus teaches that faith trusts God’s plan, rather than demanding miraculous signs. After the devil fails to tempt Jesus, departs, but only for a time, implying future challenges (like at Gethsemane and the Crucifixion).
Key Lessons in this Gospel:
• Temptation is part of spiritual life, but we can overcome it through God’s Word and faith.
• Jesus resists the devil not with His divine power but through Scripture, showing the importance of knowing and trusting God’s Word.
• Satan often twists Scripture to deceive, so discernment is needed.
• Jesus remains obedient to the Father, showing the model for resisting sin.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 is part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where He teaches about righteousness, humility, and sincerity in practicing faith. Jesus warns against performing acts of righteousness (such as giving to the poor and praying) just to be seen and praised by others. Instead, He encourages doing these acts privately, for God alone, who sees what is done in secret and will reward accordingly. Jesus teaches about fasting, instructing His followers not to look somber or seek attention while fasting, but to do it joyfully and in secret, so that only God sees their sacrifice. Jesus emphasizes that religious acts should be done out of genuine love for God, not for human recognition. Prayer, charity, and fasting should be done discreetly, as God sees and rewards what is done in secret. True devotion is about a personal relationship with God, not about showing off religious piety to impress others. When giving to the needy, do so quietly and without seeking praise. When praying, focus on sincere communication with God rather than making a public display. When fasting, do not seek pity or admiration, but do it joyfully as an offering to God. This passage reminds believers that faith is about the heart, not outward appearances.

John 2:1-11 recounts the story of the wedding at Cana, where Jesus performs his first miracle. Where Jesus, his mother Mary, and his disciples are attending. When the wine runs out, Mary informs Jesus of the situation, and although he initially responds that his "time has not yet come," he eventually takes action. Jesus instructs the servants to fill six large stone jars with water, which he then turns into wine. The master of the banquet, unaware of the miracle, praises the groom for saving the best wine until the end of the celebration.
This passage is significant for several reasons:
1. Jesus’ first miracle: It marks the beginning of his public ministry and reveals his divine power.
2. The symbolism of wine: The miracle at Cana highlights Jesus as the giver of blessings, suggesting that in Him, the fullness of life and joy is found.
3. Mary’s role: Mary’s intercession, where she informs Jesus of the need, shows her faith in Jesus' ability to address the situation. Though Jesus initially seems reluctant, Mary's confidence in Him indicates her understanding of his divine purpose.
4. Faith and obedience: The servants’ willingness to follow Jesus’ instructions without question—filling the jars with water—demonstrates faith and obedience.
5. Revelation of Jesus’ glory: The miracle is described as revealing Jesus’ glory, leading the disciples to believe in Him
Overall, this passage underscore’s themes of divine providence, the importance of faith, and the revelation of Jesus’ identity as the Messiah.

To cultivate self-awareness and mental discipline we should not let our thoughts, emotions, and impulses control us, but rather develop the ability to guide and direct them consciously. When we master our mind, we gain the power to choose our reactions, make decisions based on reason rather than instinct, and maintain a sense of calm and focus even in challenging situations. In contrast, when we are mastered by the mind, we become overwhelmed by our fears, anxieties, and desires, which can lead to impulsive actions and a loss of control. By practicing mindfulness and mental clarity, we empower ourselves to live intentionally and with purpose.

Luke 3:15-16: The People’s Expectation

Here, John the Baptist is addressing the people who are wondering if he might be the Messiah. They were amazed by his preaching and the call to repentance, and they started to think that perhaps John was the Christ. However, John humbly denies this and points to someone greater, someone "mightier" than him. He refers to Jesus, who is coming after him. John makes clear that he baptizes with water (a symbol of repentance), but the one to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, which suggests the deeper, transformative power of Christ.

Jesus, who was sinless, underwent baptism to identify with humanity and to set an example. His baptism marks the beginning of His public ministry.

When Jesus is baptized, several profound things happen:

The Heavens Open: This symbolizes the divine revelation and the beginning of God’s direct action in the world. It's a dramatic sign of God’s presence.

The Holy Spirit Descends: The Holy Spirit comes down upon Jesus in the form of a dove, signifying God's anointing and empowering of Jesus for His mission. The dove is a traditional symbol of peace and purity, but here it signifies divine approval and the presence of God’s power upon Jesus.

The Voice from Heaven: God the Father speaks directly, declaring, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” This is a declaration of Jesus’ divine sonship. It's an affirmation of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God and His mission on earth. It’s also a sign of God's favor and approval.
