Perspective

Those who, when full, enjoyed God in all, when emptied and poor, can enjoy all in God. They can sit down upon the heap of the ruins of their creature-comforts, and even then praise the Lord, as the God of their salvation, the salvation of the soul, and rejoice in him as such, in their greatest distresses. Joy in the Lord is especially seasonable when we meet with losses and crosses in the world. Even when provisions are cut off, to make it appear that man lives not by bread alone, we may be supplied by the graces and comforts of God's Spirit. Then we shall be strong for spiritual warfare and work, and with enlargement of heart may run the way of his commandments, and outrun our troubles. And we shall be successful in spiritual undertakings. Thus the prophet, who began his prayer with fear and trembling, ends it with joy and triumph. And thus faith in Christ prepares for every event. The name of Jesus, when we can speak of Him as ours, is balm for every wound, a cordial for every care. It is as ointment poured forth, shedding fragrance through the whole soul. In the hope of a heavenly crown, let us sit loose to earthly possessions and comforts, and cheerfully bear up under crosses. Yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry; and where he is, we shall be also. Amen!

Psalm 90:2 ; 4

2 Before the mountains were born� or you brought forth the whole world,� from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

4 A thousand years in your sight� are like a day that has just gone by,� or like a watch in the night.

Perspective

The favour and protection of God are the only sure rest and comfort of the soul in this evil world. Christ Jesus is the refuge and dwelling-place to which we may repair. We are dying creatures, all our comforts in the world are dying comforts, but God is an ever-living God, and believers find him so. When God, by sickness, or other afflictions, turns men to destruction, he thereby calls men to return unto him to repent of their sins, and live a new life. A thousand years are nothing to God's eternity: between a minute and a million of years there is some proportion; between time and eternity there is none. All the events of a thousand years, whether past or to come, are more present to the Eternal Mind, than what was done in the last hour is to us. And in the resurrection, the body and soul shall both return and be united again. Time passes unobserved by us, as with men asleep; and when it is past, it is as nothing. It is a short and quickly-passing life, as the waters of a flood. Man does but flourish as the grass, which, when the winter of old age comes, will wither; but he may be mown down by disease or disaster. Amen!

Ephesians 3:17-19

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Perspective

If the law of Christ is written in our hearts, and the love of Christ is shed abroad there, then Christ dwells there. Where his Spirit dwells, there he dwells. We should desire that good affections may be fixed in us. And how desirable to have a fixed sense of the love of God in Christ to our souls! How powerfully the apostle speaks of the love of Christ! The breadth shows its extent to all nations and ranks; the length, that it continues from everlasting to everlasting; the depth, its saving those who are sunk into the depths of sin and misery; the height, its raising them up to heavenly happiness and glory. Those who receive grace for grace from Christ's fulness, may be said to be filled with the fulness of God. Should not this satisfy man? Must he needs fill himself with a thousand trifles, fancying thereby to complete his happiness? Amen!

1 Thessalonians 5:11

11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Perspective

Most of mankind do not consider the things of another world at all, because they are asleep; or they do not consider them aright, because they sleep and dream. Our moderation as to all earthly things should be known to all men. Shall Christians, who have the light of the blessed gospel shining in their faces, be careless about their souls, and unmindful of another world? We need the spiritual armour, or the three Christian graces, faith, love, and hope. Faith; if we believe that the eye of God is always upon us, that there is another world to prepare for, we shall see reason to watch and be sober. True and fervent love to God, and the things of God, will keep us watchful and sober. If we have hope of salvation, let us take heed of any thing that would shake our trust in the Lord. We have ground on which to build unshaken hope, when we consider, that salvation is by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, to atone for our sins and to ransom our souls. We should join in prayer and praise one with another. We should set a good example one before another, and this is the best means to answer the end of society. Thus we shall learn how to live to Him, with whom we hope to live for ever. Amen!

1 Chronicles 29:11

11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power� and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,� for everything in heaven and earth is yours.�Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;� you are exalted as head over all.

Perspective

Neither an everlasting string of superlative words nor a never-ending chorus of angelic praise can adequately express in speech or song, the magnificence of God's awesome glory, the extent of His vast kingdom, the might of His great power and the splendour of His gracious majesty.

The mind of man cannot begin to comprehend this incomprehensible God Who has bestowed on us all the unsearchable riches of His grace. He has lavished on us over and abundantly and above all that we could ask or think or imagine or desire in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us never become too familiar with the gospel or too complacent with its teachings, that we somehow forget Who it was that willingly gave up the greatness and power and the splendour of His majesty, to be born into humble poverty. Let us honour the One Who was despised of men, rejected by His people, and nailed to a cruel tree so that whosoever would believe on His name would be forever set free from the wages of death, which we all so justly deserve.

It is the God of the universe Who flung stars into space at the beginning of time, and Who continues to uphold creation through His eternal Word, that was willingly stripped of everything, for your sake and for mine; but one day He is coming back to set up the kingdom that was promised so long ago to His forefather David, when once again the earth will resound with this triumphant hymn of praise: "Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is Yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; for You are exalted as Head over all."

Let us worship Him together in the beauty of holiness, reverence, and with great rejoicing, for He is exalted over all and He is highly to be praised. Amen!

Proverbs 15:1

New International Version

15 A gentle answer turns away wrath,� but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Perspective

This verse not only deals with the immense power of speech, for good or ill, but also touches on the issue of ones controlled actions or unguarded reactions to the words, behaviour, language, and speech of others.

Words can be helpful and healing. They can provide hope and encouragement. Wise and gracious words are a powerful tool in 'pouring oil on troubled waters' or diffusing a situation that could quickly escalate into a serious conflict.

However, the words we speak and the messages from our lips should also be spoken in spirit, in truth, in grace, and in love. For just as a gentle, controlled, thoughtful, or caring word can calm the troubled breast, bring hope to the hopeless, healing to the injured, or grace to an offender, so a harsh, hateful, cruel, or careless comment, can as easily be used to wound or discourage, hurt or hinder, harm or handicap, or speedily stir up strife and anger.

Although this proverb is applicable to every category of humankind, and if used in the corridors of power, the interactions of everyday life, or the privacy of our own homes would impact our local community and the wider world for good. Its target audience are the redeemed of God. How much influence for good this proverb would command if it were applied within the churches of Christendom and practiced in the individual lives and homes of Christians?

What a difference the Church would make in the world, if the simple message that: "A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words incites anger," were applied in lives of all who have been saved by grace through faith in Christ. What a change could be wrought if we simply followed Christ's example, Who only said and did those things He heard from His Father in heaven. No surprise that the people: "Wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of the mouth of our Lord Jesus Christ." Amen!

Hebrews 9:28

New International Version

28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Perspective

Christ was made the sacrifice for our sins, which rendered His ministry as the sin-sacrifice final and complete. Christ appeared the first time to put away sins forever, and although today He is sitting at the right hand of the Father and one day will appear for a second time when He comes to set up His kingdom, His sacrifice for sin was made once and for all - completed forever at Calvary.

Just as it is appointed for every man to die once for his sins (for the wages of sin is death for every sinner), so Christ died on the Cross once to pay the price for every single sin. He died once to pay the price for the multitude of sins that mankind has committed so that all who believe on His name would not perish but have everlasting life.

Christ was anointed of God put sin away forever, and He alone was qualified to do so. As the eternal Son of God and as the perfect Son of man, He bore the sins of the world alone, and disposed of them all forever.
And He is coming back again, for our citizenship is in heaven, and our Saviour is in heaven. Our hope is in heaven, and our treasure is in heaven.

God is in heaven, and to all who believe that Christ Jesus as Saviour, He will appear a second time. Right now, Jesus is seated at the right hand of God making intercession for us all. But one day, He will come back to earth in His glorious Second Coming at the end of the Tribulation period. And for Christians in this Church age, we look forward to the day when Christ will come in the clouds to gather us to Himself, before the Tribulation period, in the wonderful Rapture of the Church.

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus. Amen!

Revelation 21:2-4

New International Version

2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Perspective

The new heaven and the new earth will not be separate from each other; the earth of the saints, their glorified, bodies, will be heavenly. The old world, with all its troubles and tumults, will have passed away. There will be no sea; this aptly represents freedom from conflicting passions, temptations, troubles, changes, and alarms; from whatever can divide or interrupt the communion of saints. This new Jerusalem is the church of God in its new and perfect state, the church triumphant. Its blessedness came wholly from God, and depends on him. The presence of God with his people in heaven, will not be interrupt as it is on earth, he will dwell with them continually. All effects of former trouble shall be done away. They have often been in tears, by reason of sin, of affliction, of the calamities of the church; but no signs, no remembrance of former sorrows shall remain. Christ makes all things new. If we are willing and desirous that the gracious Redeemer should make all things new in order hearts and nature, he will make all things new in respect of our situation, till he has brought us to enjoy complete happiness. Amen!

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God,and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lordforever.

Perspective

Here is comfort for the relations and friends of those who die in the Lord. Grief for the death of friends is lawful; we may weep for our own loss, though it may be their gain. Christianity does not forbid, and grace does not do away, our natural affections. Yet we must not be excessive in our sorrows; this is too much like those who have no hope of a better life. Death is an unknown thing, and we know little about the state after death; yet the doctrines of the resurrection and the second coming of Christ, are a remedy against the fear of death, and undue sorrow for the death of our Christian friends; and of these doctrines we have full assurance. It will be some happiness that all the saints shall meet, and remain together for ever; but the principal happiness of heaven is to be with the Lord, to see him, live with him, and enjoy him for ever.Amen!

Psalm 56:4

4 In God, whose word I praise—�in God I trust and am not afraid.� What can mere mortals do to me?

Perspective

Be merciful unto me, O God. This petition includes all the good for which we come to throne of grace. If we obtain mercy there, we need no more to make us happy. It implies likewise our best plea, not our merit, but God's mercy, his free, rich mercy. We may flee to, and trust the mercy of God, when surrounded on all sides by difficulties and dangers. David’s enemies were too hard for him, if God did not help him. He resolves to make God's promises the matter of his praises, and so we have reason to make them. As we must not trust an arm of flesh when engaged for us, so we must not be afraid of an arm of flesh when stretched out against us. The sin of sinners will never be their security. Who knows the power of God's anger; how high it can reach, how forcibly it can strike? Amen!
