Sunday, April 26 - Pastor Stephon helped us to understand that we are not defined by our past... our sins and our mistakes do NOT define who we are today, and they especially do NOT define who we are called to be through Jesus Christ!
There were four people in the Bible with past lives they weren't proud of, but whom God gave new lives and a second chance:
1. Rahab (Joshua 2) was a pr******te living in Jericho, living a life without hope. Rahab had heard rumors and stories about how mighty and powerful was the God of the Israelites, and her heart was drawn to God. Through an amazing set of circumstances (ya really should read Joshua 2 - the whole amazing chapter!) God delivers her from the destruction of the city and Rahab goes on to become the great-grandmother of King David! Her personal life was changed forever!
2. The Sons of Korah were musicians, singers, and worshipers who overcame a family legacy of rebels and trouble-makers. Their ancestor, Korah, lead a treasonous revolt against Moses and the God of Israel (Numbers 16). Korah faced the consequences of his betrayal and disloyalty to God's leader, Moses, when the earth opened up and Korah and his rebellious followers were destroyed. But even with this family tragedy in their past, Korah's sons REFUSED to follow in their father's footsteps, and instead, they CHOSE to follow and serve God. These worshipers overcame their family legacy of rebellion and treason and built a NEW Legacy of Praise and Honor! They refused to be defined by their family's past!
3. Mary Magdalene had been possessed by 7 demons (Luke 8:2) that tormented her with behavioral problems, oppression/depressions, anger, and a multitude of other manifestations of the devil. But one day Jesus delivered her and from that day forward she faithfully followed him and supported His ministry, as well as becoming one of the most devoted followers of Jesus Christ! She was at the cross grieving his death, when many of his disciples were hiding. She witnessed his resurrection and was the first person EVER to proclaim the gospel message, "HE IS RISEN!" Mary refused to be defined by the person she was before Jesus set her free, and she became an amazing mentor to many other women who also followed Jesus!
4. Onesimus was the slave of a New Testament Christian named Philemon (the same Philemon to whom Apostle Paul wrote a letter called - Philemon!) Onesimus was a runway slave who was caught and jailed along with the greatest New Testament preacher, Apostle Paul, who introduced him to Jesus Christ, and gave him a second chance to do the right thing. Paul writes to Philemon that he is returning Onesimus to him "as a brother" in the Lord, and asks that Philemon accept Onesimus with open arms. Onesimus is returned to Philemon, no longer a rebellious slave, but a "brother", a member of the family of God! This man Onesimus was no longer a useless and rebellious slave has now become "like a son" to the great Apostle Paul! He returns to Philemon as a family member, forgiven and given a second chance after proving himself to be a new person, forgiven and mentored by Paul. Onesimus was no longer defined by his past as a slave.
Romans 8:1 says "There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus!" If our sins have been forgiven, we have been set free to become the people God has called us to be. He has a plan for your life. Because you are NOT defined by your past! Your future with Jesus Christ will be truly amazing!
